Kallang: Ice World and the Riverside

Jalan Besar ends where the hardware thins out. The Kallang begins one Circle Line stop later, and it is a 55,000-seat dome, a river, a hawker the pre-game crowd never finds, and Singapore's remaining real ice. Most visitors come for a concert and leave through a mall. Come for the waterfront. Eat at 69 Geylang Bahru. Skate if you must. Leave the museum until 2027.

The Kallang

The precinct rebranded in 2025. The building is still the National Stadium. The destination is now The Kallang — thekallang.com.sg, not a 2015 Sports Hub brochure. 1 Stadium Drive. Stadium MRT (CC6) is the door. Exit A for Gates 1–5 and 18–23, then the Promenade at Level 3. Exit B for Gates 6–17. Tanjong Rhu (TE23) Exit 2 is about 12 minutes, 750 metres. Kallang (EW10) Exit A is about 15 minutes, 900 metres. Mountbatten (CC7) Exit A is about 15. They are not interchangeable with a taxi drop at Gate 6 on a Saturday, because Gate 6 is closed weekends.

National Stadium Gate 6 is Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm, closed Saturday, Sunday and public holidays (thekallang.com.sg, contact hours). That is an administration door, not a free wander through the seating bowl. The 55,000-capacity stadium has the world's largest free-spanning dome and a retractable roof; you see the inside on a match night, a concert, or an organised tour, not because you smiled at a steward. Football is a dated ticket. The Indoor Stadium administration office opens on event days only. Check SISTIC. The concourse and the waterfront are free either way. That is the Sports Hub walk people actually mean.

OCBC Arena is daily 7am to 10pm: six indoor halls, badminton, basketball, netball, volleyball, table tennis, a gym on Level 2. Stadium Exit B is about four minutes, 300 metres. OCBC Aquatic Centre at 7 Stadium Drive is Monday and Wednesday to Sunday 7am to 9:30pm, closed Tuesdays — World Aquatics pools, 50-metre competition and training, public laps. Stadium Exit A is about eight minutes, 500 metres. Per-entry from about S$2.60 non-peak tourist adult; locals less. VISA, Mastercard, PayNow only. Water Sports Centre is Monday and Wednesday to Sunday 9am to 8pm, closed Tuesdays and selected public holidays. Splash-N-Surf has been closed for renovation since 31 March 2026. Enhancement works on community spaces run from May 2026 into 2028. Splash-N-Surf stays closed.

The Singapore Sports Museum at 6 Stadium Walk is not a rainy-day indoor. Official notice: upgrade mode from 24 March 2026, back in Q2 2027 with a new experience (thekallang.com.sg / Facebook, 20 February 2026). Giant Chess on the same walk is Monday to Sunday 7am to 10pm if you want a board you stand on. Kallang Wave Mall is daily 10am to 10pm. Neither is a museum. The indoor hour this precinct still owns is ice.

The rink

Kallang Ice World at 5 Stadium Walk #03-08, Leisure Park Kallang Level 3, is Singapore's remaining full-size real-ice rink. The Rink at JCube closed August 2023. Snow City's last day is 30 September 2026, and that was never ice skating. Stadium Exit B, a few minutes. Two-hour sessions from about S$20 adult / S$18 child 5–12, skate hire usually bundled, gloves and socks required, about 150 skaters a session, walk-up, first-come (leisurepark.com.sg). Typical blocks Sunday to Thursday from 9am with a last evening session around 7:20pm to 9:20pm; Friday and Saturday run later, extra 9:40pm to 11:40pm. Confirm the board at the counter. Ice Penguin at Clarke Quay Central is synthetic, booked, about 1,000 square feet, not this. Bounce is trampolines at Cineleisure, 8 Grange Road #09-01, Somerset Exit B — Monday to Thursday 10am to 8pm, Friday 10am to 9pm, Saturday and public holidays 9am to 9pm, Sunday 9am to 8pm (bounceinc.com.sg). It is Orchard. Bounce is at Somerset, not Stadium.

The river

Kallang Riverside Park is 5 hectares along Kallang Road, Stadium Road and Crawford Street, open 24 hours (nparks.gov.sg). Wheelchair accessible except the toilets — no handicap toilets, NParks said so. Kampong Bugis Carpark: 18 car lots, 10 motorcycle, fees apply. The Kallang Gas Holder is the remnant of Kallang Gasworks, 1862, the first site that made street-lighting gas from coal. Smooth-coated otters possible, not promised. Little Egrets and Grey Herons September to March. Cycle the tracks. The kayak launches from the Water Sports Centre at 8 Stadium Walk: sit-on-top, walk-ins at Level 1 with photo ID, last rental 5pm, Monday and Wednesday to Sunday 9am to 8pm, closed Tuesdays (thekallang.com.sg). Event days still lock the basin. Check thekallang.com.sg before you go. Standard adult from about S$18 peak / S$15.50 non-peak. It is not PAssion Wave and it is not MacRitchie. A 7am Coney loop and a 10am Kallang paddle are separate mornings.

Breakfast

Geylang Bahru Market at 69 Geylang Bahru is the tray this precinct actually lunches at. Geylang Bahru MRT (DT24) is opposite. Centre hours typically Monday to Saturday 6am to 11:45pm, Sunday 7am to 11:45pm; stall clocks are the ones that matter. Hui Wei Chilli Ban Mian at #01-58 holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand — typically Saturday to Thursday 11:30am to 9:30pm, closed Fridays. Ju Xing Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice at #01-01 typically 10am to 7pm, closed Mondays. Low Seng Kim at #01-53 is mee siam and mee rebus from about 1:30am Tuesday to Sunday, done by 10am. Return the tray. It is not Old Airport Road and it is not a pre-game food court.

Walking times

Stadium Exit B to Leisure Park Ice World: a few minutes. Exit B to OCBC Arena: four minutes. Exit A to Aquatic Centre: eight. Geylang Bahru (DT24) to 69 Geylang Bahru: across the road. DT24 to Stadium is one Downtown-to-Circle hop plus a walk, or a short taxi. Jalan Besar (DT22) to Geylang Bahru is two Downtown stops. Nicoll Highway (CC5) if you came from the bay. Pack water.

A sequence that fits. Geylang Bahru at 11:30 if Hui Wei is open that day — they are not, on Fridays, which is the point of checking. Ice World as a two-hour block if the child is still wet. Riverside at 5 if the light is the point. Kayak at 6 if you booked. A concert only if you already have a ticket. The museum as a 2027 booking. A skate, a lap swim and a match are three separate visits.

Monday

Monday on this basin is still a waterfront. Gate 6 is open. Aquatic Centre is open. Arena is open. Ice World is open. Hui Wei is open. The Sports Museum is still hoarding. Splash-N-Surf is still renovation. Bounce is in Orchard, not at Stadium. A Monday here is ban mian and a promenade, or Wednesday for a midweek skate.

Planning limits

Planning limits: Kallang is a precinct, not a mall annex to a concert. The Sports Museum stays closed until Q2 2027. Ice World, Bounce and Ice Penguin are three different rinks. Chomp Chomp is a taxi to Serangoon Gardens. Geylang after 9pm is a different east.

The kayak is not a 24-hour river. Tuesday is the ordinary closed day. Last rental is 5pm. Min age 7; 7–12 with an adult. Event weeks close the boats; check thekallang.com.sg. The waterfront is still 24 hours.
