Kampong Glam

Haji Lane gets the murals. Arab Street gets the textiles. Sultan Mosque gets the sky. Kampong Glam (Kampong Gelam on the official maps) is the Malay-Muslim heart of the city: the Sultan's precinct from 1819, gelam trees used for boat-making, and Istana Kampong Gelam at 85 Sultan Gate — now the Malay Heritage Centre, reopened 25 April 2026 after a full revamp. The galleries tell Dari Rantau Ke Rumah / From Region to Home across six rooms, from Johor–Riau kinship to seniwati on the 1950s Malay screen (malayheritage.gov.sg). It is at its best from late afternoon — when the heat drops and the gold dome lights up.

Non-Muslim visitors enter Sultan Mosque through Gate 5, facing Bussorah Street, during walk-in hours only: Saturday to Thursday, 10am–12pm and 2–4pm. Friday is closed to sightseers (sultanmosque.sg). the afternoon walk-in ends at 4pm (opens at 2pm; the morning session ends at noon; Asar is 4:00, sultanmosque.sg). After 4pm photograph the exterior; do not queue at Gate 5. Robes are free at the counter (first come, first served). You will not go into the main prayer hall without a mosque official. School and company groups email visit@sultan.mosque.sg at least two months ahead — that is not a walk-in.

The Malay Heritage Centre galleries run Tuesday–Sunday 10am–6pm (last admission 5.30pm) — it closes at 6pm and the compound closes at 9pm (8am–9pm; the galleries close at 6pm). Closed Mondays. The galleries open at 10am; the free English docent tour is 11am–12pm (go.gov.sg/mhcguidedtours-english). Singapore citizens and PRs enter free; tourist adults are S$10, concession S$8, children under 6 free (malayheritage.gov.sg). English tours: Tuesday–Wednesday 11am–12pm; Thursday–Sunday 11am–12pm and 2–3pm. Mandarin is the 2nd and 4th Sunday, 3–4pm. The Kampong Gelam street walk is Wednesday and Saturday 9.30–11am (go.gov.sg/kght-guidedtours-english) — that is the precinct, not a second gallery hour. Groups of 10+ book six weeks ahead. Hajjah Fatimah Mosque at 4001 Beach Road is the other National Monument on this edge — completed 1846, named after Hajjah Fatimah, a Malaccan businesswoman, MUIS-managed, a working mosque with a slightly leaning minaret (roots.gov.sg / muis.gov.sg, last updated 17 July 2025). Photograph the exterior; modest dress; do not treat it as a museum or as Sultan Mosque's understudy. Golden Mile Food Centre at 505 Beach Road is the 1975 Thai-and-hawker lunch next door — typically 8am–8pm, stall clocks win, Nicoll Highway (CC5) about seven minutes. Da Po Hainanese Chicken Rice and 91 Fried Kway Teow Mee are the named queues before 11.30; Beach Road Army Market shares the building. Golden Mile Complex next door is the conserved brutalist pile that still behaves like Little Thailand: gold shops, Hat Yai buses, som tam. It is not the food centre and it is not a mural. Albert Centre Market & Food Centre at 270 Queen Street is the Bugis hawker the other way — NEA, cooked food on Level 1, Bugis toward Queen Street, stalls keep their own clocks. Do not invent a Thursday-closed rule from a maps listing. Vintage Camera Museum at 8C and 8D Jalan Kledek is the lens-shaped shophouse on this edge — contact-page hours 11am–5pm daily including PH, official S$20 / concession S$15; they close for private events, so call +65 6291 2278 (vintagecamerasmuseumsg.com). Bugis or Lavender, not Gate 5. Bugis also holds Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple at 178 Waterloo Street (typically 7am–6.30pm on the temple's own 2026 notice — no midday rest, unlike Sri Mariamman), Sri Krishnan next door at 152, Maghain Aboth Synagogue at 24/26 Waterloo Street by appointment (enquiry@jwb.org.sg), and the National Library at 100 Victoria Street — Monday–Sunday 10am–9pm, closed public holidays, closed 5pm on the eves of Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year (nlb.gov.sg). MINT Museum of Toys at 26 Seah Street opposite Raffles Hotel is Tuesday–Sunday 9.30am–6.30pm, last admission 5.30pm, closed Mondays (emint.com). Treat Bugis as the arrival and Kampong Glam as the stay. Do not stack Gate 5, Hajjah Fatimah and the six galleries as a single 90-minute loop.

• Singapore Zam Zam, 697–699 North Bridge Road — opposite Sultan Mosque, murtabak since 1908. Official hours daily 7am–11pm — it closes at 11pm (zamzam.sg)
• Islamic Restaurant, 745 North Bridge Road #01-01 — biryani since 1921. Typically daily 10am–10pm (islamic.sg); Friday lunch can pause for prayer
• Albert Centre Market & Food Centre, 270 Queen Street — NEA hawker on the Bugis side, cooked food Level 1. Bugis toward Queen Street, or Rochor (DT13). Stalls keep their own clocks. The tray if you arrived at Bugis, not Haji Lane
• Golden Mile Food Centre, 505 Beach Road — 1975 Thai-and-hawker, typically 8am–8pm, stall clocks win. Nicoll Highway (CC5), about seven minutes.
