Holland Village & Dempsey

Holland Village is a cafe-and-bar pocket Singaporeans treat as an evening, not a mall annex. Lorong Mambong and Lorong Liput are the streets. Chip Bee Gardens, the black-and-white pocket behind the village off Holland Grove / Jalan Merah Saga, is the residential hour first-timers never find — walk it in the late afternoon if the cafes have peaked. Wessex Estate, further south toward Portsdown, is the other conserved black-and-white cluster: quiet roads, colonial bungalows, a gallery if one is open. Both are lived-in. Dempsey Hill, ten minutes away in the old British army barracks off Holland Road, is the long-lunch version: conserved black-and-white clusters, antiques, and tables you book.

Do not confuse this with Orchard. Holland Village MRT (CC21) has three ground exits; only Exit C has lifts (landtransportguru.net). Exit B, Holland Avenue northbound, is the village door: two minutes to Lorong Mambong, three to Holland Village Market and Food Centre at 1 Lorong Mambong (NEA hawker, 277700). Exit A, Holland Avenue southbound, is Chip Bee Gardens, Raffles Holland V and ACS International — if you come out onto a dual carriageway with no restaurants, you took A; go back in. Exit C is Lorong Liput, the only barrier-free door, and the walk toward Holland Drive Market & Food Centre at 44 Holland Drive. Dempsey has no station at the door: Napier (TE12) or Botanic Gardens (CC19/DT9) plus a short bus or taxi, or walk from the Tanglin Gate of the Botanic Gardens.

Come for a late breakfast at the hawker, a booked Dempsey lunch, or a Holland V evening. Not all three. Museum of Ice Cream at 100 Loewen Road is the Dempsey indoor: official hours Monday–Friday and Sunday 10am–6pm, Saturday 1pm–6pm, last entry 5.45pm, timed slot, card only, reservations required (museumoficecream.com/singapore). General admission from S$43, premium from S$53, under-2s free. It is not a hawker and it is not Candlenut. Candlenut at 17A Dempsey Road is the booked Peranakan table — world's first Michelin-starred Peranakan, lunch daily 12–3pm, dinner 6–10pm — dinner is from 6pm (lunch ends at 3pm, comoepicurean.com). One-north Park is the 8.9-hectare lawn behind the village — free, 24 hours (NParks); a section is closed for enhancement 2 June 2026–31 March 2027, so check nparks.gov.sg for the open path. one-north (CC23) or Buona Vista (CC22/EW21) is closer than CC21 if the park is the point. The Rail Corridor's Buona Vista community node (1.6 ha) sits in one-north, nearer Buona Vista than CC21. Queenstown is the other west breakfast, one East-West stop, and the cranes are already in it. Tanglin Halt Market at 48A Tanglin Halt Road is still on NEA's hawker list — HDB selected the estate for SERS; eat at 48A while 48A is still 48A. Commonwealth (EW20) Exit A toward Tanglin Halt Road / Faith Methodist Church is the door, about four to five minutes; if you come out onto a dual carriageway, you took the wrong door. Wei Yi Laksa & Prawn Noodle at #01-18 is typically 5.30am–noon, closed Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. Tanglin Halt Original Peanut Pancake at #01-17 is typically Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday 3.30am–11.30am — if you slept past 10, you slept past the pancake. Margaret Drive Hawker Centre at 38A Margaret Drive opened 1 August 2022 after Tanglin Halt Food Centre closed — that is a different building from 48A. Queenstown (EW19) Exit B or C (Commonwealth Avenue eastbound, toward Margaret Drive and Dawson) is the door, about ten minutes (landtransportguru.net). Exit A/D is westbound toward Mei Ling and Stirling — if you came for 38A and you are looking at a swimming complex, you took A. Margaret Market at 38 Margaret Drive is the conserved 1956 wet-market hall next door, not the hawker. Mei Ling Market & Food Centre at 159 Mei Chin Road is the hill, Queenstown Exit A/D. Do not add fried bee hoon, 48A and Margaret Drive as a single morning.

• Holland Village Market and Food Centre, 1 Lorong Mambong — the hawker on the village side, CC21 Exit B. Holland V Fried Bee Hoon at #01-11 is the breakfast stall (typically 6am–12.30pm, closed Mondays; several stall lists also flag Wednesday — check the shutter)
• 363 Katong Laksa / Holland Village Nasi Lemak at #01-15, same centre — typically 8.30am–8pm, closed Wednesdays. The coconut laksa and nasi lemak, not 328 on East Coast Road
• Holland Drive Market & Food Centre, 44 Holland Drive — the bigger heartland hawker (Exit C / Buona Vista). New Lucky Claypot Rice at #02-19 is the charcoal claypot people mean (Bib Gourmand); stalls keep their own clocks
• Ghim Moh Market & Food Centre, 20 Ghim Moh Road — breakfast lines of residents, a short bus from CC21, then the village cafes if you still want them
• Tiong Bahru Bakery at Chip Bee Gardens, 43 Jalan Merah Saga #01-74 — Mon–Fri 7.30am–7pm, Sat–Sun 8am–7pm (tiongbahrubakery.com). The black-and-white pastry, not the village hawker

• Candlenut, 17A Dempsey Road — dinner is from 6pm (lunch ends at 3pm; daily 12–3pm / 6–10pm, comoepicurean.com). Book it. This is not a walk-up hawker stretch
• Lorong Mambong and Lorong Liput for dinner — walk the streets, don't pre-commit to a chain
