Pulau Ubin

Twelve minutes by bumboat from Changi Point, fifty years back. Wooden houses, wild boar, hornbills, no traffic lights. Ubin is the argument against the idea that Singapore paved everything. NParks puts the island at 1,036 hectares of granite hills, regenerated forest and abandoned quarries — six of them, all inactive: Balai, Kekek, Ketam, Pekan, Petai and Ubin (pulau-ubin.nparks.gov.sg, May 2026).

Rent a bike at the jetty village. Chek Jawa Wetlands is the east job: about 100 hectares at the eastern tip where six ecosystems meet (sandy beach, rocky beach, seagrass lagoon, coral rubble, mangroves, coastal forest). Wetlands 7am–7pm — they open at 7am; the DIY boardwalk is 9am–5pm; Coastal Loop 600m and Mangrove Loop 500m plus the 21-metre Jejawi Tower. NParks notices (last updated 17 September 2026) close a section of the Coastal Loop boardwalk for maintenance from 15 September 2026 to 30 April 2027 — Mangrove Loop and the open Coastal stretch stay walkable (pulau-ubin.nparks.gov.sg/notices). House No. 1, the Tudor-style bungalow, is the Chek Jawa Visitor Centre; NParks (June 2026) lists the Nature Gallery as newly refurbished with educational displays and an interactive touchscreen. About 3 km from the jetty, or a 40-minute walk — park the bike at the designated lots near Punai Hut, walk the loops. Best at tides of 0.5 m or below. The guided intertidal tour remains suspended for pontoon works; the boardwalk, tower and visitor centre stay open 7am–7pm. If Chek Jawa is not the day: the Sensory Trail is 1.5 km from the jetty through village plants and mangroves to Sensory Trail Pond (NParks). Teck Seng's Place, the restored 1970s kampong house on the hill above the pond, is Wednesday–Sunday 9.30am–4.30pm, closed 12–1pm (pulau-ubin.nparks.gov.sg). Pekan Quarry is the village lookout — formerly Ho Man Choo, look-out point since 2007, herons on the flooded pits, ten minutes from the jetty if you came for a photograph not a wetland. Puaka Hill is 74 metres, Ubin's high point, with the Ubin Quarry view — a hike through Tembusu and Resam, not a boardwalk. Ketam Mountain Bike Park on the west is 45 hectares and about 10 km of IMBA-rated trails around Ketam Quarry (last granite closed 1999) — Blue Square, Black Diamond, Double Black Diamond; German Girl Shrine sits on that western fringe. Butterfly Hill is the football-field knoll inside Jelutong Campsite: about 140 butterfly species, more than 50 nectar plants, half an hour on a sunny day (NParks). Do not stack Chek Jawa, Puaka Hill and Ketam before the 7pm boat. Or book the sunrise mangrove kayak and let someone else navigate. Village breakfast is mandatory. NParks lists Encik Hassan's (Malay dishes, weekends), Cheong Lian Yuen, Sin Nam Huat and Season Live Seafood as the jetty-side kitchens.

There is no Grab on the island. Bumboats run on demand 6am–7pm, $4 per person each way, $2 extra for a bicycle, leaving when 12 passengers board — the first boats are from 6am (pulau-ubin.nparks.gov.sg/visitubin). Confirm the fare before you sit down. If no boat is at the Ubin jetty for the return, call NParks at 1800-471 7300. Camping is Jelutong, Mamam or Endut Senin — basic toilets and fire pits, permit required, not a walk-in overnight (pulau-ubin.nparks.gov.sg). Bring cash, water, mosquito sense.

• Pack snacks; options thin out once you leave the village
