Katong & Joo Chiat

This is the prettiest kilometre in Singapore: pastel Peranakan shophouses, five-foot ways, and bakeries that have been arguing about kueh for three generations. Koon Seng Road is the photo — conserved terraces with ceramic tiles and phoenix plaster. The rest of Joo Chiat Road is the reason to stay: provision shops, kopitiams, and a neighbourhood that still lives here. Chin Mee Chin Confectionery at 204 East Coast Road is the tiled-floor kaya toast — operator hours daily 8am–4pm, last order 3.45pm or sold out (chinmeechin.sg). Sri Senpaga Vinayagar at 19 Ceylon Road is the working Ganesha temple of the Ceylon Tamil community — typically 6.30am–12pm and 6.30–9pm, midday rest like most South Indian temples (confirm on ssvt.org.sg). Shoes off, shoulders and knees covered. It is not a museum stop and it is not Sri Mariamman. The Intan at 69 Joo Chiat Terrace is the booked Peranakan house-museum — Alvin Yapp's home, by appointment only (the-intan.com). Eunos (EW7) or Paya Lebar (EW8/CC9) then a walk; walk-ins bounce. It is not the Peranakan Museum on Armenian Street and it is not Baba House on Neil Road.

STB's visitor centre sits inside Kim Choo Kueh Chang at 111 East Coast Road — useful, and next to the kueh; daily 9am–9pm is the usual board. 328 Katong Laksa at 51 East Coast Road is the cut-noodle camp: official flagship hours daily 9.30am–9.30pm (328katonglaksa.sg). Old Airport Road Food Centre at Block 51 Old Airport Road (technically Geylang) is a 10-minute walk from the shophouses and the hawker centre other hawkers rate. Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre at 1 Geylang Serai, next to Wisma Geylang Serai, is a different half-day: Malay heartland wet market and nasi padang, about eight minutes from Paya Lebar (EW8/CC9) — do not confuse it with Old Airport Road or with Kampong Glam. After 9pm the even-numbered Geylang lorongs are still eating; the odd numbers are a different economy — stay on even if you came for frog porridge and zi char. East Coast Park is the other direction: NParks 180 hectares over 13km, 24 hours, lagoon swim, East Coast Lagoon Food Village at 1220 East Coast Parkway on the sand. Jumbo Seafood's East Coast Seafood Centre flagship last day is 30 September 2026 (Straits Times / CNA / Jumbo Group filing) — NParks is redeveloping the centre. A farewell set for parties of four to ten, from $258++, runs 21–29 September 2026 with 50 percent of set-menu proceeds to six charities (Jumbo / AsiaOne, 17 September 2026); 30 September is a private finale, not a walk-in crab night. Long Beach UDMC is relocating to Coastal PlayGrove, about 3.8km along the park; confirm longbeachseafood.com.sg the night you go. The lagoon hawker stays. NParks (East Coast Park notices): Area C1 dog run closed 21 September–6 November 2026; nature playgarden at Coastal PlayGrove closed 30 April–30 September 2026; water play closed typical Mondays and for maintenance on 4, 11, 18 and 25 September 2026; footpath to Carpark C1 closed 15 September–31 October, footpath to Carpark C4 closed 14 September–21 November; Area C1 Parkland Green lawn closed 24 June–30 October; Toilet E1 closed to 31 October 2026 (nparks.gov.sg). Bedok Reservoir Park is the other east water: 41.7 hectares, 24 hours, a 4.3km gravel loop 200 metres from Bedok Reservoir MRT (DT30) Exit B (nparks.gov.sg, last updated 27 January 2026). Exit A is Bedok Town Park, not the reservoir. Forest Adventure at 825 Bedok Reservoir Road, Carpark A, is Singapore's only treetop obstacle course — Monday 9.30am–2pm last departure 12pm; Tuesday–Friday 9.30am–6pm last Grand 3pm, last Kids/Junior 4pm — Kids and Junior last start is 4pm and the Grand last start is 3pm; Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 9.30am–6.30pm last Grand 4pm, last Kids/Junior 5pm (forestadventure.com.sg/useful-info/opening-hours). PAssion Wave @ Bedok Reservoir is the public sit-on-top kayak at 911 Bedok Reservoir Road — rental Wednesday–Sunday 9am–6pm, closed Mondays and public holidays (onepa.gov.sg/about-us/passion-wave). The Bedok office is Tuesday–Sunday 9am–6pm; Tuesday is office, not a boat (onepa.gov.sg/cc/passion-wave-bedok-reservoir). PA–NTUC–SAFRA 1-for-1 kayak rental for card members runs 2–30 September 2026 (OnePA E29484649); after that date confirm go.gov.sg/pawvrental. It is not Punggol Waterway. Do not stack a 9am paddle and a Grand Course. Bedok Town Park is 24 hours (NParks), the inland lawn if the lagoon is a different hour — not this sand and not the quarry loop. Coney Island, Punggol and Wild Wild Wet are not this neighbourhood — they have their own northeast page. The Peranakan Museum itself is not here either — it is at 39 Armenian Street in the Civic District (daily 10am–7pm, Fridays till 9pm). Do the shophouses in the morning, the museum another day.

Come hungry in the morning. Leave with a box of kueh and sand on your ankles. Do not try Koon Seng, the lagoon and the even-numbered lorongs as a single 9am-to-midnight. That is three half-days.
