Tiong Bahru

Singapore's oldest public-housing estate, and still the one that looks like a film set: 1930s Streamline Moderne curves, porthole windows, birdsong, and more good coffee per hectare than anywhere else in the country. The name is Hokkien tiong (grave) plus Malay bahru (new) — a 'new cemetery' versus the old one under today's Singapore General Hospital; Tiong Bahru Road first appears on a 1913 map (NHB). The Singapore Improvement Trust built these low-rise blocks in the 1930s to take families out of overcrowded Chinatown; the horseshoe at Moh Guan Terrace and Guan Chuan Street (1939–40) is the largest, and Block 78 still hides the only purpose-built pre-war civilian air-raid shelter in public housing — NHB opened it for special tours, not as a walk-in. The low-rise on Seng Poh, Yong Siak and Tiong Poh is the point. Tiong Bahru Plaza is not.

Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre at 30 Seng Poh Road is the breakfast, and the first marker on NHB's ten-site Tiong Bahru Heritage Trail (roots.gov.sg). It opened in 1951 as Seng Poh Road Market, was rebuilt 2004–06, and still runs as a two-storey municipal market: wet produce downstairs from about 5.30am, 85 cooked-food stalls upstairs. VisitSingapore lists the centre 6am–11pm; stalls keep their own clocks, and many breakfast kitchens are done by early afternoon. Jian Bo Shui Kueh at #02-05 has been steaming chwee kueh with in-house chye poh since 1958; the queue at 7.15 is residents, not a tour, and they sell out. Lor Mee 178 at #02-23 is the other named upstairs plate people mean; stalls keep their own clocks. Qi Tian Gong, Singapore's first Monkey God temple, sits at 44 Eng Hoon Street — founded 1920 in an attap hut, official hours Monday–Sunday 8am–4pm (qitiangong.com.sg / NHB). Yong Siak Street is still the coffee-and-books lane: Forty Hands opened the third-wave era here in 2010 and closed the shop in September 2022 — do not cab to #01-12 expecting a flat white. Tiong Bahru Bakery at 56 Eng Hoon Street #01-70 will sell you a kouign-amann; Woods in the Books is the children's specialist that outlived BooksActually. Do the hawker before you brunch. You do not need a ticket to have a perfect morning here.

Seng Poh Garden has the Dancing Girl — NHB trail site eight. Tiong Bahru Park (NParks, 3.3 hectares, 24 hours) is the other lawn — dogs, uncles, about five minutes from the market on Tiong Bahru Road / Lower Delta. The bird-singing corner is the junction of Seng Poh Road and Tiong Bahru Road (NHB trail site two, former Hu Lu Temple / Wah Heng coffeeshop); cages go up on weekend mornings when the uncles are in the mood, not on a timetable. The trail booklet is free on roots.gov.sg — ten outdoor markers, not a guided ticket. Zion Riverside Food Centre at 70 Zion Road is the other hawker, under the trees by Alexandra Canal — Great World (TE15), not EW17. Redhill Food Centre at 85 Redhill Lane is dinner zi char more than breakfast — Redhill (EW18), about five minutes on foot. Queenstown is the other south, one East-West stop west, and the cranes are already in it. Tanglin Halt Market at 48A Tanglin Halt Road is still on NEA's hawker list — HDB selected the estate for SERS; eat at 48A while 48A is still 48A. Commonwealth (EW20) Exit A toward Tanglin Halt Road is the door, about four to five minutes; if you come out onto a dual carriageway, you took the wrong door. Wei Yi Laksa & Prawn Noodle at #01-18 is typically 5.30am–noon, closed Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. Tanglin Halt Original Peanut Pancake at #01-17 is typically Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday 3.30am–11.30am, closed Monday, Wednesday and Friday — if you slept past 10, you slept past the pancake. Commonwealth Crescent Market at 31 Commonwealth Crescent is the other Queenstown tray (1969) — Commonwealth Exit A then about seven minutes. Margaret Drive Hawker Centre at 38A Margaret Drive opened 1 August 2022 after Tanglin Halt Food Centre closed (Queenstown EW19 Exit B/C toward Margaret Drive and Dawson, about ten minutes — Exit A/D is Mei Ling). Margaret Market at 38 Margaret Drive is the conserved 1956 wet-market hall next door, not the hawker. Do not add Jian Bo, 48A and Margaret Drive as a single morning. Wat Ananda Metyarama at 50B Jalan Bukit Merah is the Thai Theravada temple this side of Outram actually owns — oldest of that tradition in Singapore, founded in the 1920s at Silat Road, new building opened 5 January 2014 (watananda.org). Official visitor hours 8.30am–8pm daily (watananda.org/contact-us-2/). Shoes off, a working hall, not a Yong Siak extra. Outram Park or Tiong Bahru, then a short walk or bus 120, 147, 167, 196, 197, 961. NUS Baba House at 157 Neil Road is the locked Peranakan townhouse on the walk toward Chinatown (Outram Park): heritage tours ended 31 May 2025, restoration through 2027 (NUS press release, 16 May 2025 / babahouse.nus.edu.sg). Do not book a house tour. The virtual interior is on the house site. Pair Neil Road with Tea Chapter, not with a restoration fence. Orchard is a few stops away when you're ready to rejoin the city. Chinatown is 20–25 minutes on foot via Outram Park.
