Jalan Besar & Kallang

Time Out named this Singapore's coolest neighbourhood for 2026. That is a headline. The street is still a one-way of hardware suppliers, auto workshops, canvas shops and lighting wholesalers that moved in when this was swamp between Rochor and Kallang. The cafes arrived later. Walk it as a working district that learned to pour espresso, not as a mural trail.

Petain Road is the photo: 18 Chinese Baroque shophouses from the early 1930s, conserved 1991, private homes — shoot from the street, do not loiter on the five-foot way. Jalan Besar Stadium, officially Jalan Besar ActiveSG Stadium at 100 Tyrwhitt Road, opened Boxing Day 1929 and is still the 6,000-seat home of Singapore football (SportSG). Catch a match; it is not a museum. Chye Seng Huat Hardware at 150 Tyrwhitt Road is PPP Coffee's 2012 conversion of a 1950s hardware store: 360-degree bar, roastery, Annex retail. Official coffee-bar hours Tuesday–Friday 9am–7pm, Saturday–Sunday 9am–10pm, closed Mondays (pppcoffee.com); the Annex is 9am–9pm daily except the first Monday of the month.

Eat at Berseh Food Centre, 166 Jalan Besar, the two-storey NEA hawker about five minutes from DT22 Exit B — stalls keep their own clocks; Fu Zhou Poh Hwa oyster cake at #02-34 is the named plate, typically 10.30am–6pm, closed Tuesdays. Swee Choon Tim Sum at 183–193 Jalan Besar is the 1962 supper: from 12 January 2026 the flagship runs seven days, Sunday–Thursday 7am–2am, Friday, Saturday and PH eves 7am–4am, last order 30 minutes before close — the last order is 1.30am (the close is 2am). The 4am dim sum is not this flagship — Changi T2 Arrival Hall (public) at 60 Airport Boulevard #01-07 is 24 hours daily (sweechoon.com). Beach Road Scissor-Cut Curry Rice at 229 Jalan Besar is the other named supper — Hainanese curry rice in a kopitiam, Time Out's 2026 plate for this street; stalls keep their own clocks, so confirm the shutter, not a blog. Heap Seng Leong on North Bridge Road is kopi and a raw egg if Chye Seng Huat is a Monday. This is not Little India and it is not Kampong Glam. Tekka is a station west; Sultan Mosque is a station south. Stay for the hardware and the late dim sum.

The Kallang, one Circle Line stop later, is the other half-day this page maps. The precinct rebranded in 2025 (thekallang.com.sg) — 1 Stadium Drive, National Stadium, Indoor Stadium, OCBC Arena (daily 7am–10pm), OCBC Aquatic Centre (Mon/Wed–Sun 7am–9.30pm, closed Tuesdays). Stadium (CC6) Exit A for Gates 1–5 and 18–23, Kallang Wave Mall, the Aquatic Centre and the waterfront; Exit B for Gates 6–17, OCBC Arena and Leisure Park Kallang (landtransportguru.net). Gate 6 is an administration door, Monday–Friday 9am–6pm, closed weekends and public holidays — not a free wander through the seating bowl. The Singapore Sports Museum at 6 Stadium Walk is in upgrade mode from 24 March 2026, back Q2 2027 (thekallang.com.sg). Splash-N-Surf has been closed for renovation since 31 March 2026. Wave Mall enhancement works run May 2026–2028. Do not cab here for a locked museum or a wave pool. Kallang Ice World at 5 Stadium Walk #03-08, Leisure Park Level 3, is the remaining full-size real ice — Stadium Exit B; session slots typically 9–11am, 11.20am–1.20pm, 2–4pm, 4.40–6.40pm, 7.20–9.20pm, extra 9.40–11.40pm Friday and Saturday. Kallang Riverside Park is 5 hectares along Kallang Road, Stadium Road and Crawford Street, 24 hours (nparks.gov.sg) — Kallang Gas Holder is the 1862 remnant of Kallang Gasworks. Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre at 69 Geylang Bahru is the tray this basin actually lunches at: Geylang Bahru (DT24) across the road, typically Monday–Saturday 6am–11.45pm and Sunday from 7am; stalls keep their own clocks. Hui Wei Chilli Ban Mian at #01-58 is the Michelin Bib Gourmand plate — typically Saturday–Thursday from about 11.30am, closed Fridays. Confirm the shutter. Do not stack Petain Road, Swee Choon and a 55,000-seat dome as a single morning.
