Chinatown

Chinatown is three neighbourhoods stacked: temple-and-hawker by day, shophouse drinking by night, and a handful of serious kitchens hiding in Blair Plain. Most visitors see Pagoda Street and leave. Stay. Walk two blocks to Telok Ayer, Ann Siang or Club Street and the souvenir gauntlet drops away.

Start at Sri Mariamman (Singapore's oldest Hindu temple, 244 South Bridge Road) before the midday rest — morning 6am–12pm, evening 6–9pm (9.15pm Fridays); the evening session is 6pm–9pm and the morning session ends at noon (smt.org.sg). then Buddha Tooth Relic Temple at 288 South Bridge Road — Tang-style, free, 7am–5pm including the Buddhas of the World Museum, rooftop garden with the giant prayer wheel. Jamae Mosque (Masjid Jamae Chulia) sits opposite Sri Mariamman at 218 South Bridge Road — National Monument, Chulia wakaf, free; chinatown.sg visitor hours Sat–Thu 10am–6pm, Friday 10am–12pm and 2–6pm (prayer first). Chinatown Heritage Centre at 48 Pagoda Street is the one ticketed reason to stay on Pagoda: three 1950s shophouses, daily 10am–8pm, last entry 7.15pm, Chinatown Exit A, book a timeslot (chinatownheritagecentre.com.sg). Official board lists a maintenance close 13 October 2026 — last entry is 7.15pm. It is not a walk-in NHB museum. Thian Hock Keng at 158 Telok Ayer Street is the Hokkien Mazu temple most Pagoda Street itineraries never reach: National Monument, assembled without nails, typically 7.30am–5pm daily, Telok Ayer (DT18). Eat at Maxwell Food Centre (1 Kadayanallur Street) before the Tian Tian queue peaks — Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice at #01-10/11 is closed Mondays, typically 10am–8pm the rest of the week — or go deeper into Chinatown Complex at 335 Smith Street, which is where locals actually lunch. Singapore City Gallery at 45 Maxwell Road (The URA Centre) is the free planning model next door: Monday–Saturday 9am–5pm, closed Sundays and public holidays — it opens at 9am (ura.gov.sg). Maxwell (TE18) Exit 2. Groups over 20 must book. Tea Chapter at 9 Neil Road is the 1989 teahouse: Maxwell Exit 3, across the road; tea house Sun–Thu 11am–9pm, Fri–Sat 11am–10.30pm — the tea house closes at 9pm (retail from 10.30am is not the sitting room, teachapter.com). Rooftops from 8pm are the night.

Clarke Quay is ten minutes if you want a river cruise. Skip it if you want a better night. This is also where experience.sg's chef's table and cocktail crawl live — the Chinatown that doesn't show up on a hop-on bus. NUS Baba House at 157 Neil Road is locked: heritage tours ended 31 May 2025, restoration through 2027 (NUS press release, 16 May 2025 / babahouse.nus.edu.sg). Do not taxi here for a 10am slot. The virtual interior is on the house site; some artefacts sit at NUS Museum. The Intan in Joo Chiat and the Peranakan Museum on Armenian Street are the visits you can still book. Outram Park is still the Blair Plain door. The Pinnacle@Duxton at 1G Cantonment Road is the other Chinatown view: Singapore's first 50-storey HDB, public skybridge on the 50th storey, 9am–9pm last admission, S$6 at the Block 1G Level 1 kiosk (pinnacleduxton.com.sg). it closes at 9pm, last admission 9pm. Daily public quota is 150, and only 50 visitors at a time — go early on weekends or you will be turned away. The 26th-storey bridge is residents only. SINGAPO人 at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, 1 Straits Boulevard Level 2, is the free CBD indoor: Monday 2pm–8pm, Tuesday–Sunday 10am–8pm including public holidays, walk-in — closes at 8pm (singaporeccc.org.sg). Downtown (DT17) or Raffles Place; do not arrive at 10am on a Monday. Bit Bit Forest, the inflatable-rabbit roof garden at the same building, runs 11 September–13 December 2026, 10am–10pm, free — closes at 10pm (singaporeccc.org.sg). Pearl's Hill City Park is the 8.5-hectare reservoir hill above the shophouses — 24 hours (NParks), no wheelchair access, Outram Park about ten minutes uphill. Tembusu, a lotus pond, CBD through the trees. Do it at 6pm, not as a second temple. Mid-Autumn 2026 is not the corridor you screenshotted in 2024. After 24 years of large lanterns on Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road, the Chinatown Festival Committee is not hanging them this year (chinatown.sg / Mothership, 15 August 2026). Community lanterns run 11 September–4 October at Kreta Ayer Community Club, Kreta Ayer Square and Banda Street, free. Mid-Autumn itself is Friday 25 September. The giant installations this year are at Gardens by the Bay (through 27 September) and Lights by the Lake, not over this dual carriageway. Do not stand on New Bridge at 8pm waiting for silk. Walk Banda Street. Then eat.

• Tea Chapter, 9 Neil Road — tea house is 11am–9pm Sunday–Thursday and 11am–10.30pm Friday–Saturday (retail from 10.30am, teachapter.com)
