Where we'd start
Any of these makes a good first stop.
We'd start with Singapore's only natural hot spring. Sembawang Hot Spring Park is free and open from 7am to 7pm, and you sit by the pools and soak your feet. Bring a pail, since the tap water comes out at around 70°C, and eggs for the egg station. Go on a weekday morning, because the pools are crowded from 4pm on weekdays and all weekend. Sembawang Park, 15 hectares of north-coast beach open 24 hours, is the sea view afterwards, with a 30-metre jetty the British started in the 1940s.
Woodlands Waterfront Park runs 11 hectares along Admiralty Road West and is open 24 hours. Its 400-metre jetty, the northernmost point of mainland Singapore, is a refurbished Royal Malaysian Naval jetty with old mooring anchors for seats. Come at dawn for cattle egrets or at dusk for the strait. Admiralty Park is the largest park in the north, 27 hectares with a 7-hectare playgarden of 26 slides, so bring the children here and the binoculars to the jetty. If it rains, Woodlands Regional Library is a big, free public library beside Causeway Point.
In Yishun, Yishun Pond Park is 2.3 hectares beside Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, open 24 hours, with a therapeutic garden NParks built with the hospital. From the pond's 14.5-metre Spiral Tower, a bridge leads into Yishun Park, Singapore's first arboretum, which has more than 70 dipterocarp species. The Live Turtle and Tortoise Museum, which has moved to Chencharu Close, keeps more than 600 of them. Chong Pang Market is the breakfast stop, and the NHB's Yishun Heritage Trail has routes of one hour and 2.5 hours.
Getting there
Canberra MRT is the stop for Sembawang Hot Spring, and bus 882 from Sembawang MRT runs to Sembawang Park. At Woodlands North MRT, Exit 2 is about 12 minutes downhill to the waterfront jetty. Yishun Pond is through the Exit E underpass at Yishun MRT, and Khatib MRT is the stop for the Live Turtle and Tortoise Museum.
Best time
Go to the hot spring on a weekday morning, since the pool is crowded from 4pm and all weekend, and it closes for cleaning from 11am to 2pm on Mondays and Thursdays. Come to the jetties at dawn or dusk. The Live Turtle and Tortoise Museum closes on Tuesdays.
