Seng Poh before brunch

Jian Bo while the queue is residents, blocks before Yong Siak

Tiong Bahru is allergic to itineraries that start at 11. Come at 7:30. The slow-morning essay can keep the kueh genealogy and the laundry poles. This clock is: market, horseshoe blocks, bakery after the hawker, out before Yong Siak becomes a photoshoot. You do not need a ticket. That is the point.

Tiong Bahru Market at 30 Seng Poh Road is wet produce downstairs from about 5:30am and 85 cooked stalls upstairs. VisitSingapore lists the centre 6am–11pm; stalls keep their own clocks, and breakfast kitchens thin by early afternoon. Jian Bo Shui Kueh at #02-05 has steamed chwee kueh here since 1958; the 7:15 queue is residents. Lor Mee 178 at #02-23 is the other named plate. Tray return is law; the etiquette piece is the grammar.

Qi Tian Gong at 44 Eng Hoon Street is Singapore's first Monkey God temple — 8am–4pm (qitiangong.com.sg), shoes off, two minutes between the blocks, no listing of its own so this paragraph is the pin. The hosted walk is for people who want the SIT dates said out loud; the NHB trail booklet on roots.gov.sg is free and starts at the market. Tiong Bahru Bakery at 56 Eng Hoon Street #01-70 is after Jian Bo, not instead. Forty Hands on Yong Siak closed September 2022 — do not cab to #01-12. Wat Ananda is the Outram-edge Thai hall, 8:30am–8pm, not a third breakfast. Queenstown's Tanglin Halt is EW20 — before the cranes, not this estate.

Start

Tiong Bahru (EW17) Exit A onto Jalan Membina; Exit B is the plaza — ignore it

When

Morning — start by 7:30am

The clock

Run it in order. Steal one stop if you must. Hours and from-prices live on the listings — we do not invent them here.

  1. 7:30 AM

    Market upstairs, Exit A

Seven minutes from Tiong Bahru Exit A to 30 Seng Poh Road. If you come out into a mall, you took Exit B — cross the road. Wet market downstairs if you like the hush; Jian Bo upstairs before they sell out. Queue for whichever line is longest and not speaking English.

  2. 8:45 AM

    Horseshoe blocks, then the temple

Moh Guan Terrace and Guan Chuan Street. Look up: air-wells, laundry poles, 1939 curves the rest of the island knocked down. Block 78's air-raid shelter is a rare NHB open day, not a walk-in. Qi Tian Gong at 44 Eng Hoon from 8am. The hosted walk if you booked it; without a host, the trail booklet is enough.

  3. 10:00 AM

    Bakery after the hawker

56 Eng Hoon Street #01-70. Official hours Mon–Fri 7:30am–8pm, Sat–Sun 8am–8pm (tiongbahrubakery.com). Kouign-amann, then sit on a kerb. Woods in the Books is the children's specialist that outlived BooksActually. You are not brunching until the rice cakes have happened.

  4. 10:45 AM

    The park, then stop

Tiong Bahru Park, 3.3 hectares, 24 hours, five minutes on Tiong Bahru Road / Lower Delta. Birds, uncles, a lawn that is not trying to be a destination. Zion Riverside at 70 Zion Road is Great World (TE15), a different canal — only if Jian Bo was a snack and you still want a tray. Chinatown is 20–25 minutes downhill; Maxwell is a different morning (South Bridge before noon).

Do not stack

  • Tanglin Halt, Margaret Drive and Jian Bo as a single breakfast — that is three towns and a nap on the East-West line
  • Maxwell the same morning — different centre, different clock
  • Forty Hands at 78 Yong Siak — closed September 2022
  • Wat Ananda plus a locked Baba House plus Qi Tian Gong — incense, a restoration fence, a nap
  • Redhill Food Centre as breakfast — EW18, dinner zi char, a different postcode

FAQ

Which MRT exit?

EW17 Exit A for the market and the estate. Exit B is Tiong Bahru Plaza. Outram Park if you are walking in from Chinatown or toward Wat Ananda. Great World for Zion Riverside, which is not this breakfast.

Do I need the hosted walk?

Not to see the blocks. Yes if you want someone to point at 1936 vs 1939 and the shelter under Block 78. The market is free to enter; you pay the stall.

Tiong Bahru or Queenstown?

Tiong Bahru if you came for Streamline Moderne and Jian Bo. Queenstown if you came for Tanglin Halt at 48A before SERS finishes the argument — Commonwealth Exit A — or Margaret Drive at 38A (Queenstown Exit B/C). They are one or two stops west. Do not try both before noon.

Is the air-raid shelter open?

Not usually. Watch NHB / HAN@Tiong Bahru for rare open days. Walk the horseshoe from the street. The trail booklet is on roots.gov.sg.

Coffee first?

No. Hawker, then bakery, then a cup. Reverse it and you have paid Paris prices for breakfast and photographed a queue you should have beaten.
