Where we'd start
Any of these makes a good first stop.
Toa Payoh was the first town the Housing and Development Board planned and built entirely itself, and a morning here shows how a public-housing estate works. We'd start with breakfast at Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Market, where the surrounding blocks eat, then walk to Lian Shan Shuang Lin, a monastery from 1902 set among the flats at 184 Jalan Toa Payoh. It's free and a working monastery, so dress modestly and take your shoes off in the halls. The town park is closed for redevelopment until 2030, but the dragon playground on Lorong 6 is still standing, and the NHB's heritage trail has routes from 30 minutes to two hours.
Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is the lawn to carry on to: 62 hectares along about 3km of the restored Kallang River, open 24 hours and wheelchair accessible. Get to the river by about 9am, while it's still cool. Otters turn up sometimes, though nobody can promise them, and herons are the likelier sighting. Kong Meng San, the largest Buddhist monastery in Singapore, is five minutes from Bright Hill MRT and free, and Harmony Centre, an interfaith gallery inside An-Nahdhah Mosque, is worth a call ahead. For breakfast, Shunfu Mart in Marymount is the small food centre with the cult stalls.
Ang Mo Kio is where we'd spend an early morning. Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West is a hill forest open 24 hours, and at its foot Kebun Baru Birdsinging Club has room for more than 1,000 cages, which bird owners hang from poles so the songbirds can sing. It's busiest early. The town's heritage trail passes the Clover Block, the only block of circular flats HDB built. For lunch, AMK 628 Market has long tables where you point, pay and find a seat, and for a sit-down dinner Mellben Seafood is where the north-east books a table for white pepper crab.
Getting there
Toa Payoh MRT Exit A is an eight- to 10-minute walk along Lorong 6 to the dragon playground, and Braddell MRT Exit C is nearer the Lorong 8 market. Bright Hill MRT is about five minutes from Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park and Kong Meng San. For AMK 628, Yio Chu Kang MRT is closer than Ang Mo Kio.
Best time
Eat early, since the markets are at their best for breakfast and each stall keeps its own days. Walk the river by about 9am, or after 5pm once the heat has eased. Kebun Baru's bird owners usually arrive from about 5.30am.
A day in Toa Payoh, Bishan & Ang Mo Kio
This is the order we'd go in, though each stop works fine on its own.
Where to eat
- Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Market, 210 Lorong 8 Toa Payoh: about 80 stalls and a wet market, at its best for breakfast
- Shunfu Mart, 320 Shunfu Road: a small food centre in Marymount with a handful of cult stalls, five minutes from Exit A
- AMK 628 Market, 628 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4: long tables where you point, pay and find a seat, and each stall keeps its own hours
- Mellben Seafood, 232 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 #01-1222: white pepper crab for a sit-down dinner, so book ahead
Questions
Is Toa Payoh Town Park open?
No, NParks has closed Toa Payoh Town Park for redevelopment, and it's expected to reopen in 2030. It's the 4.8-hectare pond park many people remember from 1970s wedding photos, at the corner of Lorong 2 and Lorong 6. The dragon playground isn't inside it, so that stop is still on. Until the park reopens, NParks points visitors to Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park.
Where is Toa Payoh's dragon playground?
It stands in front of Block 28 on Lorong 6, across the road from SAFRA Toa Payoh. From Toa Payoh MRT, take Exit A and walk eight to 10 minutes along Lorong 6. Exit A's signs also point to the town park, which is closed. There's very little shade, so we'd go early and bring water.
Which monastery should I visit, Kong Meng San or Lian Shan Shuang Lin?
Kong Meng San Phor Kark See at 88 Bright Hill Road is Singapore's largest Buddhist monastery, free, about five minutes from Bright Hill MRT and usually open to visitors from 8am to 4pm. Dress modestly, take your shoes off in the halls and skip photos indoors. Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery at 184 Jalan Toa Payoh is a 1902 National Monument, open daily 8am to 5pm. Go to Bright Hill for scale and Toa Payoh for the monument.
What else is there to see near Toa Payoh and Bishan?
Two quieter stops are Bidadari Park and Harmony Centre. Bidadari Park, by Woodleigh MRT, is 13 hectares around Alkaff Lake, open 24 hours and wheelchair-accessible except the Woodland Experiential Trail and Marshland Boardwalk. Harmony Centre, the interfaith gallery MUIS opened in 2006 at Masjid An-Nahdhah, is at 9A Bishan Street 14, behind the stadium near Bishan MRT. Call 6478 4310 or email harmony@muis.gov.sg before you go, and dress modestly.
Can I see otters at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park?
Sometimes. Smooth-coated otters turn up most often along the river here, but nobody can promise them, and herons are the likelier sighting. Get to the river by about 9am, while it's cool. If an otter family appears, give it room, don't chase or feed it, and keep your drone in its bag.
What's on Ang Mo Kio's heritage trail?
Three self-guided routes of 1.5, 2.5 and 1.5 hours using public transport, covering 5.5 to 12 km of the town. The Iconic Landmarks route starts at Ang Mo Kio Town Centre and passes the Clover Block, the only block of circular flats HDB built, and another route begins at Chu Sheng Temple, a short walk from Yio Chu Kang MRT.
When is Kebun Baru Birdsinging Club at its best?
Early. Bird owners usually arrive from about 5.30am, hang their cages from poles and let the birds sing, and many stay until late afternoon. The club is near 159 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5, at the foot of Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West, with room for more than 1,000 cages. Competitions are held regularly. Ang Mo Kio and Mayflower MRT are the nearest stations.
Which hawker centres are in Toa Payoh, Bishan and Ang Mo Kio?

Ang Mo Kio has 628, Blk 724, Cheng San, Chong Boon, Mayflower, Teck Ghee Court, Teck Ghee Square and two Kebun Baru centres, and Bishan has Shunfu Mart. We'd start with Lorong 8 at breakfast.
