Bishan: Bright Hill and the River

Junction 8 will sell you a cinema. Most visitors who come off at Bishan (NS17/CC15) never leave the mall. Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is the other Bishan: 62 hectares stretching over 3 kilometres of a Kallang River that used to be a concrete canal, open 24 hours, and it is the restoration poster child the rest of the island still photographs without getting off the Circle Line. Otters possible, not promised. Herons more likely. A lawn residents actually use. NParks last updated the page on 27 January 2026. Bright Hill (TE7) is five minutes to the Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 entrance. Bishan MRT is the other door. They are not interchangeable with a taxi drop at Junction 8.

The park

Official park size is 62 hectares. Recycle Hill is the lookout over the whole of it. The landscape pond spans more than 2 hectares on what used to be a commercial fishing pond. The Butterfly Habitat holds more than 30 species — Tawny Coster, Plain Tiger — if you actually walk into it instead of photographing the river from a bridge. The Cleansing Biotope is the plant filter that keeps the water playground honest. More than 90 bird species have been logged: Purple Heron, White-breasted Waterhen, Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker. Do not line-fish in the river, Dragonfly Pond or Lotus Pond — NParks said so, in those words. Cycling on the bridges is discouraged. Dog-run lights switch off at 10:30pm daily. Wheelchair accessible. Elderly friendly. Pets leashed. This is a park that happens to have two MRT stations, not a station that happens to have grass.

The bridges

Three bridges are in pieces this season, and the hop-on bus will not tell you. The bridge closest to Bishan Park Condominium is closed for improvement works from 16 September to 31 December 2026. The bridge near Dragonfly Pond is closed from 24 August to 4 December 2026. Use the signed alternatives — nparks.gov.sg posted all three. LTA is also building the North-South Corridor tunnel and Teck Ghee station for the Cross Island Line through this park; the park stays open. The old entrance at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and Marymount Road has been closed since 21 December 2020. Use the new entrance along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1.

Getting there

Bright Hill (TE7) to the Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 gate: about five minutes. Bishan (NS17/CC15) to the river: a short walk once you refuse Junction 8. Carpark A: 130 car lots. Carpark B: 55. Carpark C: 78, including 10 season. Bicycle parking: 48 lots. Fees apply. The park sits on the Central Urban Loop of the Park Connector Network. It will take you toward Toa Payoh or toward Upper Thomson if you have a bike and the humility not to walk it in the September heat. Pack water. There is a McDonald's in the park with a water point for dogs. That is not a recommendation. That is a fact.

Breakfast

Shunfu Mart at 320 Shunfu Road is the breakfast this postcode actually queues for. Opened June 2000, renovated 2022, typically 6am to 8pm; most cooked-food stalls are scraping down by mid-afternoon. Marymount (CC16) Exit A is about five minutes via Shunfu Road. Upper Thomson (TE8) is about seven. Mei Zhen Hakka Delicacies at #02-26 is soon kueh, yam cake, glutinous rice — typically 6:30am to 1pm, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Leong Hainanese Chicken Rice at #02-22 typically Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 7pm, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Chocolat N' Spice at #02-12 is the muffin stall, typically Tuesday to Saturday 7:30am to 2:30pm. Wak Limah at #02-15 is mee rebus and lontong, morning. Arrive before 11. Return the tray. NEA's 2026 cleaning list still had 14 December as a Shunfu closed day. Check before you taxi.

AMK 628 at 628 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 is the other tray, and it is not Shunfu. Reopened 3 January 2026 after improvement works — Ang Mo Kio Town Council posted it. Centre hours typically 6:30am to 9:30pm; stall clocks are the ones that matter. Song Heng Fishball Minced Meat Noodle at #01-75 is typically 5:30am to noon Tuesday to Saturday (stampede.sg, last updated 3 August 2026). Song Heng fishball noodles: 5:30am–noon, Tue–Sat; check the current queue before leaving. Closed Sunday and Monday. Mee pok dry from about S$4. Sumo Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee at #01-76 is the wet-style plate, typically closed Wednesdays. Ho Bee Roasted Food at #01-84 is the queue. Yio Chu Kang (NS15) is closer than Ang Mo Kio (NS16) if you came off the North-South. It is not Old Airport Road.

Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West is the neighbourhood hill forest, 21 hectares, 24 hours, opposite the town library on Avenue 6 — and the pond is gone. NParks: North-South Corridor works closed a section, removed the pond, put an interim path in. The hill stays open. Ang Mo Kio Town Garden East is the 5-hectare former rubber estate behind Ang Mo Kio MRT, spice trees, a sand playground, not a pond-and-bench; the station stairs are still fenced. Neither is Bishan-AMK Park. Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West: 21 hectares, 24 hours (Ang Mo Kio Town Garden). Garden West is the walk after 628 if you still have legs. Harmony Centre at Masjid An-Nahdhah in Bishan is the interfaith gallery if a child is asking questions a river will not answer — call ahead, modest dress, unique in the region, not a drop-in souvenir shop. Kong Meng San at 88 Bright Hill Road is the monastery five minutes from TE7: free, a working campus, no indoor photography. Bright Hill at 9; Shuang Lin by noon; Toa Payoh Town Park stays closed until 2030 (The Monasteries the Coaches Never Find). The monastery, the hawkers and the river are separate visits.

Thomson Nature Park is the other green on this ridge, and it is not a lawn. 50 hectares, 7am to 7pm, pets banned, no bikes, no PMDs, no fishing (nparks.gov.sg/visit/parks/park-detail/thomson-nature-park). 7am is the langur park. Former Hainanese village ruins from the 1930s to the 1980s. A key conservation site for the critically endangered Raffles' Banded Langur. Lesser mouse-deer if you are quiet. Wheelchair access only at the entrance node. Carpark on Upper Thomson Road: 34 lots. Lentor (TE5) is the listed station, then 2.3 kilometres along Yio Chu Kang Road, which is not a pleasant walk in September — take a bus to Upper Thomson Road. Hide food. Stay on the trails. It is not Bishan-AMK. It is the forest that buffers the Central Catchment, and the TreeTop Walk is a different Monday.

Springleaf Nature Park is 6 hectares along Nee Soon Road / Upper Thomson Road, open 24 hours (NParks). Springleaf (TE4): walk 550 metres against the traffic along Upper Thomson, past the Shell. Carpark: 21 lots. Groups over 30 need a permit a month ahead. Stay on designated trails. Otters possible on Sungei Seletar, not promised. Sembawang Hills Food Centre at 590 Upper Thomson Road is the evening hawker this stretch actually means — 1974, 36 stalls, typically 6am to 9pm, Mayflower (TE6) closer than the name suggests. NEA cleaning on 12 October 2026. Upper Thomson Food Centre is the quieter sibling if Chomp Chomp is slammed. Mellben is the white-pepper crab the northeast still books. None of these is the river. The langur trail, the pepper crab and the foot bath are three separate visits.

Walking times

Bright Hill (TE7) to the park: five minutes. Bright Hill to Kong Meng San: five. Bishan MRT to the river: a short walk once you refuse the mall. Marymount (CC16) Exit A to Shunfu: about five. Upper Thomson (TE8) to Shunfu: about seven. Yio Chu Kang (NS15) to 628: a neighbourhood walk. Springleaf (TE4) to the nature park: 550 metres. Mayflower (TE6) to Sembawang Hills Food Centre: the useful door. Pack water.

A sequence that fits. Shunfu at 7 if Mei Zhen is open that day — they are not, Mondays and Tuesdays, which is the point of checking. The river at 9, Recycle Hill, the butterfly habitat, off the closed bridges. 628 at 11:30 if Song Heng has not sold out, or as a different morning. Kong Meng San only if incense is the point and you skipped Shunfu. Thomson Nature Park at 4 if the langur is the rumour you are chasing, last light before 7. Sembawang Hills at 6 if the evening is this postcode. Shunfu, 628 and Chomp Chomp are three separate trays.

Monday

Monday on this river is still a park. Bishan-AMK is 24 hours. Springleaf is 24 hours. Thomson Nature Park is 7am to 7pm, Mondays included. Shunfu's Hakka stall is closed Mondays. Leong Chicken Rice is closed Mondays. Song Heng at 628 is closed Mondays. Junction 8 is the mall. A Monday here is a 7:15am lawn and a tray that is still serving, or Wednesday for the soon kueh.

Planning limits

Planning limits: the park is a river, not a mall annex. No drones on the otters. No line-fishing at the Dragonfly Pond. Kong Meng San, Thomson Nature Park and the Zoo are three separate trips. Bidadari is the Woodleigh lake. Toa Payoh Lorong 8 is the town hawker. Chomp Chomp is a taxi to Serangoon Gardens.
