Toa Payoh: the Lorong 6 Dragon

Junction 8 is Bishan. HDB Hub will sell you a town centre. Toa Payoh Town Park is the 1970s wedding lawn every nostalgia blog still photographs, and NParks closed it on 1 February 2024. Expected completion is 2030 (nparks.gov.sg, last updated 27 January 2026). 4.8 hectares at the junction of Lorong 2 and Lorong 6, five minutes from Toa Payoh (NS19). The park stays closed until 2030. The dragon people still mean is on Lorong 6, in front of Block 28. The monastery is behind Block 26. The tray is at 210 Lorong 8. That is the town. The park is a 2030 booking.

The dragon

The Lorong 6 dragon is the visit. Built 1979, designed by HDB architect Khor Ean Ghee, terrazzo head, a body of coloured rings, a slide in the mouth, one of two remaining full-size dragon playgrounds in the country (roots.gov.sg / Toa Payoh Heritage Trail). Near Blocks 31 and 264, opposite SAFRA Toa Payoh at 293 Lorong 6. It is not inside the closed park. The Town Garden dragon that used to sit on the wedding lawn is already gone. This one survived the demolitions around it. Climb it if a child is with you. Photograph it if you grew up here. It is a playground, not a nature reserve. Sand, sun, no shade worth mentioning. Toa Payoh (NS19) then along Lorong 6: eight to ten minutes. Braddell (NS18) is the other North-South door if Lorong 8 is breakfast.

Shuang Lin

Lian Shan Shuang Lin at 184 Jalan Toa Payoh is the National Monument this town hid behind the blocks. Founded 1898, construction from 1902, Hall of Celestial Kings and Mahavira Hall gazetted 17 October 1980, the oldest Buddhist monastery in Singapore (roots.gov.sg). Official hours daily 8am to 5pm; Cheng Huang Temple on the same grounds the same hours; monastery office weekdays 9am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 1pm, closed Sunday (shuanglin.sg). Modest dress, shoes off in the halls, a working campus, not a mural. Toa Payoh interchange then bus 230M, 235 or 238, four stops, alight Opp Blk 26, cross, walkway near Blk 27. Fifteen to twenty minutes on foot through the estate if you refuse the bus. You will walk past a town that still queues for fishballs. Then a roof that has been here longer than the blocks.

Breakfast

Toa Payoh Lorong 8 at 210 Lorong 8 Toa Payoh is the tray this postcode actually lunches at. About 80 stalls, a wet market, stall clocks win. Nine Stone Avenue Seletar Sheng Mian & Mee Hoon Kway at #01-05 is typically 6am to 2pm, closed Wednesdays and Thursdays. Hai Kee Noodle at #01-59 typically 8am to 3pm, closed Tuesdays. Da Lao Fried White Kway Teow at #01-23 typically 8am to 1:30am, closed Fridays. The centre reopened after a two-month renovation in late 2025. Return the tray. Braddell (NS18) is closer than Toa Payoh (NS19) for this door — a neighbourhood walk. Kim Keat Palm Market at Block 22 Lorong 7 is not this centre. NEA closed it for repairs and redecoration from 14 September to 13 December 2026 (nea.gov.sg, last updated 1 September). Kim Keat Palm is closed through 13 December 2026. This door is 210 Lorong 8. It is not Old Airport Road.

Sensory Park

Toa Payoh Sensory Park on Lorong 5 is the other pocket if a child is with you: echo dishes, bamboo, a garden meant to be touched, 24 hours, free, no toilets on site — use the hawker. It is not the dragon and it is not the closed park. Kidz Amaze at SAFRA Toa Payoh, 293 Lorong 6, is the indoor if the sky has opened: walk-in, no reservation, socks, adult S$5, Monday to Friday off-peak 1pm to 7pm, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 10am to 9pm (safra.sg). It sits across the road from the dragon. It is not Downtown East and it is not Splash at Punggol. Pair it with Lorong 8. Town Park stays closed until 2030.

One morning

Shuang Lin, the dragon and Kong Meng San are three separate stops. A sequence that actually works: Lorong 8 at 7 if Nine Stone is open that day — they are not, Wednesdays and Thursdays, which is the point of checking. Dragon at 9 while the rings are still empty. Shuang Lin at 10, off by 5. Sensory Park if a toddler is the point. Kidz Amaze after 1 on a weekday. Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park if you still need grass — NParks told you to go there instead of the closed lawn, 62 hectares, 24 hours, Bright Hill five minutes to the Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 door. Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park: 62 hectares, 24 hours, about 3km of restored river (Bishan River).

Getting there

Toa Payoh (NS19) Exit A, then eight to ten minutes along Lorong 6 toward SAFRA at 293 for the dragon — not Exit D, and not the locked Town Park (Exit A also lists the park, closed until 2030). Only Exit D is a dedicated barrier-free door; A, B and C share a lift near Block 500 Lorong 6 (landtransportguru.net). Station to Shuang Lin by bus from Exits A or B: 230M, 235 or 238, four stops, Opp Blk 26. On foot: 15 to 20 through the estate. Braddell (NS18) Exit C toward Lorong 2 is the closer North-South door for 210 Lorong 8. Toa Payoh to Braddell is one stop. Pack water.

Ng Ah Sio at 208 Rangoon Road is the pepper if you came off at Farrer Park instead. Founder at 347 Balestier Road is the late bowl, closed Tuesdays. Whampoa is Hoover Rojak, typically Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 4pm. None of these is Lorong 8. They are the next road west, and the villa on Tai Gin is locked until 2027. Hoover Rojak is at Whampoa; Founder is closed Tuesdays (Balestier Is Pepper). A Teochew bowl, Shuang Lin and the dragon are three separate stops.

Bidadari Park is the other new-town lake if you came off at Woodleigh (NE11): an old cemetery, Alkaff Lake, birds still come. Harmony Centre at Masjid An-Nahdhah in Bishan is the interfaith gallery if a child is asking questions a dragon will not answer — call ahead, modest dress, unique in the region. Kong Meng San at 88 Bright Hill Road is the campus five minutes from TE7, a different morning, no indoor photography. After the monasteries, Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is 62 hectares and open 24 hours (The Monasteries the Coaches Never Find). MacRitchie is boots and a 7am at Venus Drive, closed Mondays. MacRitchie is a separate morning from the monastery.

Monday on this town is still a monastery. Shuang Lin is daily 8am to 5pm. The dragon does not close. Sensory Park does not close. Lorong 8's stall clocks still win — Hai Kee is the Tuesday that is closed, Nine Stone is Wednesday and Thursday. Kidz Amaze is 1pm to 7pm on a weekday. Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall is locked until 2027, Monday or otherwise. Town Park stays closed until 2030. A Monday here is an 8:15am roof and a tray that is still serving.

The morning

A sequence that fits. Lorong 8 at 7. Dragon at 9. Shuang Lin at 10, last look 5. Bishan-AMK at 5 if the light is a heron. Kidz Amaze only if the sky opened. Little India is two North-South stops south if the banana-leaf is still empty — Tekka, not this postcode. Civic District is the other way, courtrooms, a different morning. Botanic Gardens and Bukit Timah is the forest if you still have boots. This is the first HDB town, and it still works.

Chong Yang at Shuang Lin is 18 October 2026, 8am to 4:30pm at the columbarium (shuanglin.sg). That is a family day, not a tourist hour. Qing Ming has already passed. Chong Yang is a family day at the columbarium, not a tourist light-up.

Planning limits: Toa Payoh Town Park stays closed until 2030. Start in the morning in September. No photography inside the Mahavira Hall. Shuang Lin, Kong Meng San and the Zoo are three separate trips. Kim Keat Palm Market stays closed through 13 December 2026. The dragon is on Lorong 6.
