Coney Island Before the Gate Locks

Eat at Punggol Coast first, 7am on the island, 3.6km in two hours, the waterway at sunrise, and Wild Wild Wet only if you skipped the sandflies.

Coney Island Before the Gate Locks

Start here

Punggol and Pasir Ris is the northeast half-day: a slightly feral island park, a waterway through new-town HDB, and a mangrove next to a waterpark. It is not Katong. It is not Changi. Coney Island Park is 81 hectares of casuarinas, mangroves and five themed beaches, free, 7am to 7pm (NParks). Two bridges, no shops, no camping, no fishing. The gates lock at 7pm. Do not get stuck inside. Eat first.

Getting there

Punggol Coast MRT (NE18) Exit 2 is the west-entrance door, then about 10 to 20 minutes on foot via Punggol Way to Punggol Point Walk. Punggol (NE17) is one stop back if you want the LRT and the older town. The east entrance is Lorong Halus Wetland, for cyclists continuing to Pasir Ris, not a useful first-timer door. There is no carpark on Coney; the nearest cars sit at Punggol Settlement. Bicycle parking is at both gates. If you came from Pasir Ris MRT thinking this was the island, you came to the waterpark.

Breakfast

Eat before you walk. Punggol Coast Hawker Centre at 84 Punggol Way #02-55 opened 25 July 2025 inside Punggol Coast Mall — NEA-appointed, Kopitiam-run, 40 stalls, 576 seats, daily 6am to 10pm, about three minutes from NE18. There is no hawker on the island. Pack water. Pack a hat. Pack the humility to turn around if the sky goes black — this is coast, and lightning here is not a vibe. NParks is specific: stay on the trails, do not feed macaques, do not hold a plastic bag or a water bottle up where a monkey can see it, do not enter Haw Par Beach Villa, wear long pants and covered shoes (sandflies), keep distance from wild boar, stray dogs and the occasional box jellyfish.

The island

Coney Island itself is a 3.6-kilometre loop, about two hours, easy on paper, rugged in places, NParks: wheelchair-friendly at the east and west ends, not in the middle. Five themed beaches face Pulau Ubin. More than 80 bird species have been spotted, from Baya Weaver to Oriental Magpie-robin. The only two wild Paku Raja cycads on mainland Singapore sit near Beach Area C; they grow slowly and can live a thousand years. You will not see them if you came for a selfie on the bridge and left. Weekdays. Opening. Off the island before the 7pm lock. The day after a public holiday is a carpark argument at Settlement.

The waterway

Punggol Waterway Park is the HDB postcard, 25.79 hectares, open 24 hours (NParks), four themed stretches — Nature Cove, Recreation Zone, Heritage Zone, Green Gallery. Jewel Bridge is the dome. Kelong Bridge is the fishing-platform tribute. Sunrise Bridge is named for a reason. Fishing is not allowed. Damai LRT or Punggol MRT. The old Punggol Road bus stop was preserved when the park was built; it is a photograph, not a service. The kayak is flat water, HDB as backdrop, morning before the kayaks run out, a different muscle from Marina and from Ubin. A 7am Coney loop and a 10am paddle are separate mornings.

Point Park

Punggol Point Park is the jetty looking at Malaysia, sunset, a walk from the west Coney gate. Punggol Settlement is the seafood after that sunset — book a table; many kitchens open late afternoon, not for breakfast. Punggol Park is the older lake, less Instagram than the waterway, more aunties. None of these is Coney. Coney is the island. The waterway is the town. Settlement is dinner.

Pasir Ris Park is the family mangrove, 70 hectares stretching 3.2 kilometres, open 24 hours (NParks). The mangrove is 6 hectares in Area 2 near carpark C: a boardwalk, a three-storey birdwatching tower, Giant Mudskippers, mud lobsters, White-collared Kingfisher if you are lucky, Blue-throated Bee-eater April to September. NParks puts the mangrove forest walk at 1.5 kilometres, one to two hours; the full park trail is 10 kilometres, three hours, and you do not need the full park trail. Cycling is not allowed on the mangrove boardwalk. Public guided mangrove walks run in school holidays, 1.2 kilometres, 1.5 hours, free, book on nparks.gov.sg. The playground eats the afternoon. The 1,600-square-metre therapeutic garden in Area 4 is 67 metres from the sea, the first of its kind with a kelong view. That is a different morning from this island. Pasir Ris boardwalk: 1.5km, 1–2 hours; start at Area 2 near carpark C (Pasir Ris Park).

Wild Wild Wet at 1 Pasir Ris Close, Downtown East, is the waterpark, not the mangrove. Official hours (wildwildwet.com, updated September 2026): Monday to Friday 12pm to 6pm, last admission 5pm; Saturday, Sunday, school holidays and public holidays 11am to 6pm, last admission 5pm; closed Tuesdays. Off-peak adult S$29 / child or senior S$21; peak S$39 / S$29. Free shuttle from Pasir Ris (EW1) to Downtown East daily 11am to 10pm. It is not Adventure Cove. That one is Sentosa. Downtown East is the mall around the slides, useful as a base, not a reason to skip the park. Pasir Ris Central Hawker is the tray if you refused Settlement. Pasir Ris MRT (EW1), then a short bus or walk toward Downtown East.

Sungei Api Api is the other mangrove, a park in the new town, boardwalk and sculptures, shorter than Sungei Buloh, pair with Pasir Ris Park not instead of it. Pasir Ris Town Park is 14 hectares opposite the MRT, 24 hours, a fishing pond that is a reminder of the town's actual job before the condos. Visit the pond with the mangrove on a separate hour.

The morning

A sequence that fits. Punggol Coast hawker at 6:30. West gate at 7. Loop the island, off by 10. Waterway or Point Park if you still have legs. Settlement for a late lunch if the kitchens are open, or Pasir Ris mangrove at 4 if the child needs a boardwalk that is not Coney. Wild Wild Wet on a weekday that is not Tuesday, and only if you skipped the sandflies. Bring water if you are on Coney at midday. The island and the slides are separate days.

NE18 Exit 2 to the west Coney gate: 10 to 20 minutes. The island loop: 3.6 kilometres, about two hours. East gate at Lorong Halus to Pasir Ris Park is a bike, not a pleasant walk in September. Pasir Ris MRT to the mangrove at carpark C is a short bus or a longer walk. Downtown East is next to the park, not next to Punggol Coast. Changi Point is a different taxi and a bumboat. East Coast is the other sand. This is the wilder one.

Planning limits

Planning limits: Coney at 7am, the Pasir Ris mangrove at 9, or Wild Wild Wet at noon on a day that is not Tuesday. Those are three separate outings. Do not feed the macaques. The west gate locks at 7pm.

Tampines Eco Green is the other wild patch in this postcode: 36 hectares, 24 hours with no lighting at night, NParks wants you off by 7pm (nparks.gov.sg, last updated 27 January 2026). Pets banned. No cycling. No fishing. Three bird hides, 75 species, dirt paths that are not wheelchair accessible. Tampines Avenue 9 and 12. Go early. It is not Coney and it is not the Pasir Ris mangrove. Tampines Eco Green, Coney Island and the Pasir Ris mangrove are three separate visits. Wild Wild Wet remains Monday to Friday 12pm to 6pm last admission 5pm, Saturday, Sunday, school holidays and public holidays 11am to 6pm last admission 5pm, closed Tuesdays — wildwildwet.com, updated September 2026. Off-peak adult S$29. It is not Adventure Cove. Pasir Ris MRT (EW1), not Punggol Coast.

Punggol Heritage Trail sits between Punggol North Avenue and Punggol Point: 2.75 hectares, 24 hours, over a kilometre of Orchard, Cascading and Barringtonia tracks, interpretive signs for the kampong, the private zoos and the pig-farming district this town used to be (NParks). Phase 2 is expected by end-2026. Nearest parking is Punggol Coast Mall. It is not Coney. It is the sentence about the town the island sits next to. Do the trail after the hawker and before the west gate, or after you are off the island. The town-first version lives in Punggol Waterway. The gates lock at 7pm.

Tampines Round Market is the other east hawker if you came off the island at the east gate and refused Settlement. Our Tampines Hub is the mall-tray version. Sun Plaza Park is the lawn. None of these is Coney. The gates still lock at 7pm. Eat first. Hide food. Long pants. Covered shoes. Sandflies. Off by 6 if you are not sure about 7.
