Pasir Ris Park: Mangrove Boardwalk

Downtown East will sell you a wave pool. Punggol and Pasir Ris also owns a 6-hectare mangrove that NParks still bothers to name plant by plant, a playground the rest of the island photographs without getting off at EW1, and a hawker at 110 Pasir Ris Central that is not a mall food court. Most visitors who come this far came for Wild Wild Wet and never walked past carpark C. Pasir Ris (EW1) is the door. Use it for the boardwalk. The slides can wait until 12 on a day that is not Tuesday.

Pasir Ris Park is 70 hectares stretching over 3.2 kilometres, open 24 hours, from Pasir Ris Road to Jalan Loyang Besar (nparks.gov.sg, last updated 27 January 2026). Four areas. Wheelchair accessible. Elderly friendly. Carpark A in Area 1: 141 lots, fees apply. Carpark C in Area 2: 2,542 lots — that is the Downtown East shared deck, fees apply, and it is the mangrove door. Carpark D in Area 3: 217 lots, parking is free. Carpark E in Area 4: 28 lots, fees. Carpark F in Area 4: 133 lots, parking is free. The park connector will take you toward Tampines or toward East Coast if you have a bike and the humility not to walk it in the September heat.

The mangrove

Start at Area 2 near carpark C. Six hectares in Area 2 near carpark C: Bakau Minyak with stilt roots, Api-Api Putih with pencil roots, Perepat with conical ones, Nipah Palm if you have ever wondered where attap chee comes from. NParks puts the forest walk at 1.5 kilometres, one to two hours; the full park trail is 10 kilometres, three hours, and you do not need the full park trail. A three-storey birdwatching tower for White-collared Kingfisher and Black-naped Oriole; Blue-throated Bee-eater April to September. Giant Mudskipper, Mud Lobster, Telescope Snail. A jetty over Sungei Tampines for eels if you are lucky and water snakes if you are looking down. Cycling is not allowed on the boardwalk. Public guided walks run in school holidays — 1.2 kilometres, 1.5 hours, free, book on nparks.gov.sg. Stay on the timber. The intertidal mud is a habitat, not a shortcut.

Getting there

Pasir Ris (EW1) to Pasir Ris Town Park: opposite the station, two minutes. Town Park to the hawker at 110 Pasir Ris Central: a few minutes. Station to the mangrove at carpark C: 15 to 20 minutes on foot, or the first stop on buses 3, 5, 6, 12, 17, 21, 89, 354, 358 out of the interchange. Downtown East runs a free shuttle from the MRT daily 11am to 10pm — useful for the slides, late for a 7:30am boardwalk. 11am is that shuttle; Wild Wild Wet is closed on Tuesdays. Punggol Coast (NE18) is a different town and a different morning. The island that locks at 7pm lives in Coney Island Before the Gate. The waterway that does not lock lives in Punggol Waterway.

Breakfast

Pasir Ris Central at 110 Pasir Ris Central is the tray this postcode actually lunches at. Two floors: traditional downstairs, Fareground upstairs, typically from 7am, stall clocks win. Wild Olives at #02-19 is the western plate people queue for; return the tray. It is not Old Airport Road and it is not Punggol Coast Mall. Pasir Ris Town Park across the road is 14 hectares, 24 hours, a marine pond that is a reminder of the fishing village before the condos, Black-naped Oriole and Common Kingfisher if you sit still. Visit the pond with the mangrove on a separate hour. The pond and a wave pool are separate visits.

The rest of the park is why families never leave. Area 3 is the playground NParks still calls Singapore's largest — climbing nets, a space-net, enough swings that you can find a quiet one at 9am on a weekday. Area 2 also holds the Kitchen Garden (400 metres, about 45 minutes, volunteer-run, do not pluck) and the Butterfly Garden near carpark C: Plain Tiger, Blue Glassy Tiger. Maze Garden is hide-and-seek, not a hedge at Hampton. Area 4 is the 1,600-square-metre therapeutic garden, 67 metres from the sea, the first of its kind with a kelong view — a swale, a labyrinth lawn, wheelchair-accessible planters. It is a sit, not a playground annex. Area 1 is closest to Downtown East and the chalets; it is not the mangrove.

Sixty-five barbecue pits run along the beach, Areas 1 through 4. Book on axs.com.sg before you drag a bag of charcoal; weekend pits go. Camping is Area 1 and Area 3 only, free permit through AXS, tents, no open fires including camping stoves if you did not book a pit. NParks is specific on the water: take care in the intertidal, read the box-jellyfish precautions before you wade, and if you see a crocodile at the coastal edge stay calm and back away slowly (avs.nparks.gov.sg). This is not Palawan. This is a coast that still has teeth. Pack covered shoes for the boardwalk. Pack the humility to stay out of the mud.

The slides

Wild Wild Wet at 1 Pasir Ris Close is the waterpark, and it is not the park. Official hours (wildwildwet.com, updated September 2026): Monday to Friday 12pm to 6pm, last admission 5pm; Saturday, Sunday, school holidays and public holidays 11am to 6pm, last admission 5pm; closed Tuesdays. Off-peak adult S$29 / child 3–12 or senior 55+ S$21; peak S$39 / S$29. The Downtown East shuttle still starts at 11am; it will not open the slides. Splash Fest through 31 October 2026 cuts those fares further — check the promotions page. PSLE marking 12 to 14 October 2026 is 12pm to 6pm, off-peak, even though the children are off. Children's Day on 2 October is peak. Rain Code: if attractions stay closed more than 90 minutes you get a return voucher valid 60 days; it does not apply after 5pm. Keep the receipt. It is not Adventure Cove. That one is Sentosa. Downtown East is the mall around the slides. Useful as a locker. Not a reason to skip carpark C.

Sungei Api Api is the other mangrove, a park in the new town, boardwalk and sculptures, entrance via Pasir Ris Drive 3, Riverina View and Elias Road, 24 hours (NParks). Shorter than Sungei Buloh. Pair with Pasir Ris Park, not instead of it. Tampines Eco Green is 36 hectares at Tampines Avenue 9 and 12, open 24 hours with no lighting at night — NParks wants you off by 7pm (last updated 27 January 2026). Pets banned. No cycling. No fishing. Three bird hides, 75 species including Baya Weaver and Purple Heron, an eco-toilet, dirt paths that are not wheelchair accessible. Go early. The Pasir Ris mangrove, Sungei Api Api and Tampines Eco Green are three separate visits.

A sequence that fits. Hawker at 7 if you want a tray before the mud. Town Park pond at 7:30 if the uncles are already fishing. Mangrove at 8, tower, jetty, off the boardwalk before the playground fills. Area 3 at 10 if a child is the point. Wild Wild Wet at 12 on a weekday that is not Tuesday, last admission 5. Therapeutic garden at 5 if the kelongs are the light. BBQ only if you booked. Coney at 7am and this mangrove at 9am are separate mornings. The island still locks at 7. This park does not.

Walking times

EW1 to Town Park: two minutes, opposite. Hawker at 110: a few minutes. Station to mangrove carpark C: 15 to 20 on foot, or one bus stop. Downtown East shuttle: 11am to 10pm, so it will not save a 7:30am boardwalk. Area 3 playground from carpark D: a short walk, free parking. Area 4 therapeutic garden from carpark F: free parking, 67 metres from the sea. East Coney gate at Lorong Halus to this park is a bike, not a pleasant walk in September. East Coast is the other sand — 13 kilometres, a lagoon you can swim in, no MRT on the beach. Changi Point is a different taxi and a bumboat. This is the family mangrove.

Monday

Monday on this stretch is still a mangrove. The park is 24 hours. Town Park is 24 hours. The hawker does not close Mondays; stall clocks still win. Wild Wild Wet is the Tuesday that is closed, not the Monday. KidsSTOP is the Monday that is closed, and it is in Jurong. Kidz Amaze Splash is at SAFRA Punggol, 9 Sentul Crescent, not Downtown East — Monday to Friday off-peak 1pm to 7pm (safra.sg). A Monday here is the 7:15am boardwalk. The slides start from Wednesday.

Planning limits

Planning limits: start the boardwalk in the morning in September. Cycling is not allowed on the boardwalk. Stay off the mud, and do not approach a crocodile. Coney, Wild Wild Wet and a Settlement crab are three separate outings. End at the Town Park pond, then return to Area 2 before dark.
