Punggol Waterway at Sunrise

Coney Island is the feral park that locks at 7pm. Punggol and Pasir Ris is also a new town with a man-made river, a hawker that opened in 2025 so you would stop eating on the island, and a Point Park that NParks has closed through December 2027. Most visitors do the island and call it the northeast. The town is the rest of the day, and the waterway is 24 hours in a way Coney is not. Punggol MRT (NE17) is the older door. Punggol Coast (NE18) is the hawker and the west Coney gate. They are one stop apart and they are not the same morning.

Breakfast

Punggol Coast Hawker Centre at 84 Punggol Way #02-55 opened 25 July 2025 inside Punggol Coast Mall — NEA-appointed, Kopitiam-run, 40 stalls, 576 seats, daily 6am to 10pm, three minutes from NE18 Exit 2. Eat here. There is no hawker on Coney, and there is no hawker at Point Park. 6:30am is the civilised hour if the island is next; 8am is the civilised hour if the waterway is the point. Return the tray. Then walk.

The waterway

Punggol Waterway Park is 25.79 hectares along Singapore's longest man-made waterway, open 24 hours (NParks). Four themed stretches: Nature Cove, Recreation Zone, Heritage Zone, Green Gallery. Jewel Bridge is the dome. Kelong Bridge is the fishing-platform tribute you cannot fish from — fishing is not allowed. Sunrise Bridge is named for a reason. Damai LRT (PE7) is the closest if you came off the Punggol LRT west loop; Punggol MRT Exit A through Waterway Point dumps you on the park. The old Punggol Road bus stop and a 160-metre stretch of the old road were preserved when the park was built. Photograph them. They are not in service.

Kayak

The kayak is flat water, HDB as backdrop, morning before the boats run out, a different muscle from Marina and from Ubin. A 7am Coney loop and a 10am paddle are separate mornings. SG Bike docks sit along the waterway; sunrise is the empty hour, 5pm is the residents. Pets are allowed, leashed. No open fires. The park connector is the North Eastern Riverine Loop, and it will take you to Coney or to Pasir Ris if you have a bike and the humility not to walk it in the September heat.

Point Park

Punggol Point Park is not a sunset this season. NParks closed the 0.4-hectare park and its adjacent carpark from 11 August 2026 to 31 December 2027 for upgrading — toilets remain open, the ship-inspired deck does not (nparks.gov.sg, last updated 27 January 2026). The end of Punggol Road is a closed park through 31 December 2027. The 300-square-metre viewing deck, the pond with red-eared sliders, the playground: all behind that notice. Punggol Promenade Punggol Point Walk carries the same closure. Punggol Settlement next door is still the seafood. The waterway is still 24 hours. Coney still locks at 7. That is the northeast you can actually walk.

Settlement

Punggol Settlement is the two-storey seafood next to that closed deck. Book a table. Many kitchens open late afternoon, not for breakfast, which is why the hawker at the mall exists. It is not Jumbo. Jumbo is East Coast Seafood Centre, a booking, a different east. Weekend dinner here is a queue. Weekday 5pm is a table. Eat, then walk the waterway, not the fenced park. The kelongs on the horizon are still the point from a restaurant window.

Punggol Heritage Trail sits between Punggol North Avenue and Punggol Point: 2.75 hectares, 24 hours, over a kilometre of Orchard, Cascading and Barringtonia tracks, interpretive signs for Kampong Punggol, the private zoos and the pig-farming district this town used to be (NParks). Phase 2 is expected by end-2026. Nearest parking is Punggol Coast Mall. Wheelchair users should be aided; stepping stones and grass mounds are not friendly. It is not Coney. It is the sentence about the town the island sits next to. Do it after the hawker and before the west gate, or after you are off the island and still have legs.

Punggol Park is the older lake, less Instagram than the waterway, more aunties. Sengkang Riverside is the next town's river park if the waterway has peaked and you still want a boardwalk without a mall. Jalan Kayu is the prata the northeast still names — a short taxi, a night, not a waterway breakfast. None of these is Coney. Coney is 81 hectares, 7am to 7pm, two bridges, no shops, gates that lock. Eat first. Hide food. Long pants. Covered shoes. Sandflies. Off by 6 if you are not sure about 7.

Pasir Ris Park is the family mangrove, 70 hectares, 24 hours, Area 2 near carpark C, a 1.5-kilometre boardwalk, a three-storey tower. Pasir Ris MRT (EW1), not Punggol Coast. Pasir Ris Central Hawker is the tray if you refused Settlement. Wild Wild Wet is Monday to Friday 12pm to 6pm last admission 5pm, weekends and school holidays 11am to 6pm, closed Tuesdays. Coney and Wild Wild Wet are separate days. Pasir Ris boardwalk: 1.5km, 1–2 hours; start at Area 2 near carpark C (Pasir Ris Park).

The morning

A sequence that fits. Hawker at 6:30. Heritage Trail or Waterway at 7:30 while the joggers still own it. Settlement at 6 if you booked. Coney only if you skipped the town, 7am west gate, off by 10. Kayak only if you skipped Coney. Jalan Kayu only if the night is this postcode. Point Park has no sunset this season. The island, the paddle, the crab and the slides are four separate outings.

NE18 Exit 2 to the hawker: three minutes. Hawker to the west Coney gate: 10 to 20. NE17 Exit A through Waterway Point to the park: a mall corridor. Damai LRT to Nature Cove: a short walk. Eat at Punggol Settlement. Punggol Point Park stays closed through 31 December 2027. East Coney gate at Lorong Halus to Pasir Ris Park is a bike, not a pleasant walk in September. Changi Point is a different taxi and a bumboat. East Coast is the other sand. This is the new-town one.

Planning limits

Planning limits: the waterway is a park, not a mall corridor. Start Coney at 7am. No fishing off Kelong Bridge. Do not feed the sliders. Settlement and Jumbo are different kitchens. Point Park stays closed through 31 December 2027. Heritage Trail Phase 2 is expected by end-2026. Coney locks at 7pm. The waterway stays open.

Tampines Round Market is the other northeast tray if the Coast hawker was a different morning. Our Tampines Hub and Sun Plaza Park sit one town south. Lower Seletar Reservoir is the other water if the waterway has peaked. None of these is Coney. The island still locks at 7. The waterway does not. Stay for the hour when the HDB lights come on.

Kidz Amaze is not at Downtown East. Splash @ Kidz Amaze is at SAFRA Punggol, 9 Sentul Crescent — indoor water play, socks, swimwear or dry-fit in the pool, cotton banned, towels not provided (safra.sg/faq/kidz-amaze). Official hours Monday to Friday off-peak 1pm to 7pm; Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 10am to 9pm; school-holiday weekdays 10am to 7pm. No reservation. Unlimited play. First-come. Adults S$5. Children 5 and under need an accompanying adult; Splash wants a supervisor in the pool at all times. Re-entry with a stamp if you leave for the hawker. It is not Wild Wild Wet. Wild Wild Wet is 1 Pasir Ris Close, closed Tuesdays, last admission 5pm. Coney, Splash and Wild Wild Wet are three separate outings.

Sengkang Riverside is the next town's river, and it is not this waterway. 21.3 hectares at Anchorvale Street and Sungei Punggol, 24 hours (nparks.gov.sg). Three plots: Visitor, Mangrove, Civic. Kupang LRT five minutes to Visitor or Mangrove; Farmway LRT five minutes to Civic. A constructed wetland NParks still calls one of Singapore's largest, a fruit-themed boardwalk, a 290-metre Riverside Bridge. A section of the track is closed for pipe laying until 31 December 2026 — use the posted alternative, do not argue with a fence. Do not fish. Purple Heron, Little Tern, Collared Kingfisher if you sit still. Over 20 fruit-tree species. It is not Coney and it is not a mall annex. Sengkang Riverside Park is 21.3 hectares, open 24 hours, at Anchorvale; pipe-laying runs through 31 December 2026 (Sengkang Riverside Park).

Kampong Lorong Buangkok is Singapore's last mainland kampong, 7 Lorong Buangkok, still lived-in, privately owned, no ticket, no visitor centre. Walk the public path in daylight, in a small group, quietly. Do not peer into houses. Do not fly a drone. Do not treat zinc roofs as a museum. Buangkok (NE15) then a walk or bus toward Yio Chu Kang Road; it is a residential lane off Gerald Drive, not a gate with a queue. Pair it with Sengkang Riverside, not with a tour-bus stop. The waterway still does not lock at 7. The kampong is someone's home.

Hougang is the town between this waterway and Serangoon, and it is not a mall. Kovan 209 at Block 209 Hougang Street 21 is the tray; Aljunied-Hougang Town Council The next closure is 16 to 20 November 2026. Japanese Cemetery Park at 825B Chuan Hoe Avenue is daily 7am to 7pm, free (jas.org.sg, opening time 7:00–19:00). Kovan (NE13) is the door, not Punggol Coast.
