Koon Seng Road is the Peranakan terrace row. East Coast Park is the water. Geylang is the rest of the east, and it is the part most visitors are told to skip. Some of that warning is fair — the odd-numbered lorongs after dark are a red-light stretch, and you do not need a guide to clock it. The even-numbered lorongs are where the city still eats at 1am. Geylang Serai is where it eats at 11am. They are not the same visit.

Geylang Serai

Geylang Serai Market is the Malay wet market and food centre at the Paya Lebar end of this neighbourhood: nasi padang, kuih, a Ramadan bazaar that is another country when the dates line up. Dress modestly. This is a working market, not a heritage installation. Paya Lebar MRT (EW8/CC9) is the door; Eunos (EW7) if you are coming from the east-west and do not mind a walk. It is not ten minutes from Koon Seng. Do not treat it as a Peranakan extra. Go hungry in the morning, or go during Ramadan evenings if the calendar is kind, with extra respect and no drone.

Old Airport Road

Old Airport Road Food Centre at Block 51 is technically Geylang and a ten-minute walk from the shophouses, and it is the hawker other hawkers rate. Dong Ji at #01-138 for char kway teow. Lao Fu Zi at #01-12 for the Bib Gourmand version. Nam Sing Hokkien Mee. To-Ricos kway chap. Famous Old Airport Fried Oyster. Dakota MRT (CC8) is the hawker door from town.

Circuit Road

Circuit Road is the overflow locals use when Block 51 is slammed — same neighbourhood energy, shorter queues, a different uncle. It is not a destination. It is what you do when Dong Ji has a line that wraps past the drinks stall and you are still on the first plate of the night.

After 9

After 9pm the even-numbered lorongs are night eating: frog porridge, durian, zi char that does not close because a tourist asked. Stay on the even numbers if you came for food. The odd numbers are a different economy and you do not need to perform curiosity there. No Signboard is white-pepper crab at the Geylang original; pick a lane — white, chilli, or black — and live with it. Sin Huat is the uncle-decides version: cash energy, no laminated menu, famous, loud. Go with someone who has been, or accept the bill. Neither is Jumbo. Jumbo is East Coast Seafood Centre, a booking, a different east.

The tour

The Geylang food tour is three hours if you would rather not decode the lorongs alone. A guide who knows which door is frog and which door is a conversation you did not come for is worth the fee on a first night. After that you can DIY the even numbers. Bring cash. PayNow has arrived and is not universal. Tray return still applies at the hawker centres; a zi char table is a different contract, and the uncle will tell you if you try to buss a claypot.

Walking times

Walking times, because this neighbourhood is larger than Koon Seng and smaller than the rumour. Dakota to Block 51 is a few minutes. Block 51 to Koon Seng Road is about ten. Paya Lebar to Geylang Serai Market is the walk from the mall, not from the tiles. Circuit Road is a short taxi from Old Airport Road, not a pleasant wander through the lorongs with a full stomach. Katong at 9:30am and Geylang at 9pm is a completed east. Reverse it and you will eat Dong Ji for breakfast, which is a choice, not a plan.

Dong Ji Fried Kway Teow at #01-138 is closed Thursdays, typically 11:30am to 7:30pm, one plate at a time, Penang-dry. Lao Fu Zi at #01-12 holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and closes Wednesdays and Saturdays. Nam Sing Hokkien Mee has been there since the place opened. To-Ricos Guo Shi does kway chap that queues even at 3pm. Famous Old Airport Fried Oyster is the orh luak people mean. Dakota (CC8) Exit A is the door. The after-dark crawl meets at Block 51 at 7pm. Lunch before 11:30 if you want a seat. After 2pm many of the famous woks are scraping down.

Haig Road is the Katong-adjacent tray if Geylang Serai was the morning and you still want a plate before the lorongs. Paya Lebar (EW8/CC9) is also the door for the Air Force Museum at 400 Airport Road if a child is still with you and the even numbers can wait. The Air Force Museum and frog porridge are separate visits. Dakota (CC8) remains the door for Block 51.

Planning limits

Planning limits: Geylang Serai in the morning, Old Airport Road at 7, or the even-numbered lorongs after 9. Those are three evenings. Photograph the street, not into homes. The odd-numbered lorongs after dark are a red-light stretch.

The Air Force Museum at 400 Airport Road is 10am to 5pm, closed Wednesdays, tourist adult S$8 after the June 2026 reopen — a weekday that is not frog porridge. Buses 90 and 94; 94 does not run Sundays. The Air Force Museum and Sin Huat are separate visits.

City Plaza at Paya Lebar is the bargain warren next to Geylang Serai if the market was the morning and you still want a floor of fabric. It is not Bugis Street. Stay on the even-numbered lorongs after 9pm if you came for food. The odd numbers are a different economy. Dakota (CC8) is the hawker door. Paya Lebar is the Malay market door.

Foo Hai Ch'an is the monastery this east actually owns — a working hall, not a lorong. Hungry Ghost Festival in the seventh lunar month turns the even numbers into offering tables; walk around them, do not photograph the food for the dead. The Hari Raya bazaar at Geylang Serai is the other calendar when the dates line up. Dress modestly. Paya Lebar is still the Malay door. Dakota is still Block 51.

Even-numbered lorongs after 9 only if Block 51 was a snack. No Signboard or Sin Huat is a different night, not a third plate after Nam Sing. Jumbo remains East Coast Seafood Centre, a booking, a different east. Geylang Serai, Dong Ji and frog porridge are three separate easts.

Monday on this stretch is still a Malay tray and a wok. Geylang Serai does not close Mondays. Block 51 does not close Mondays; Dong Ji at #01-138 is the Thursday that is closed, Lao Fu Zi at #01-12 the Wednesday and Saturday. The even-numbered lorongs still eat at 1am. The Air Force Museum is closed Wednesdays.
