Singapore River: Cavenagh, Boat Quay, Robertson Quay

Clarke Quay is a colour-graded river with touts. It has a job — first-timers, hens, a river cruise at 7pm — and it does that job loudly. The river that stays with you is a street you walk, not a boat you sit on. Boat Quay is the original shophouse curve. Robertson Quay is upstream, quieter, better food. The Civic District owns the mouth of it. Marina Bay is where it stops pretending to be a river. Walk the seam.

The museum

Start at the Asian Civilisations Museum on Empress Place: daily 10am to 7pm, Fridays until 9pm, last gallery 30 minutes before close. Shipwreck ceramics, a Tang cargo, the river doing what it has always done — bring things in. Eight to ten minutes along the water from City Hall. Then Cavenagh Bridge, the suspension crossing the British built in 1869 and still use as a pedestrian hinge between the museum and the Fullerton. Five minutes. Look down. The water is the colour of strong teh, which is historically accurate.

Boat Quay

Elgin Bridge is the 1929 crossing, cast-iron lamps, the civic seam between North and South Bridge Roads. Walk it at dusk toward Boat Quay. The shophouses on the curve were godowns; they are restaurants now, and the good ones are one street back, not on the water with a sandwich board. Boat Quay at 6:30pm is a promenade. Boat Quay at 9pm is a menu thrust into your chest. Leave before the second of those, or drink on Circular Road where the river is a rumour.

The cruise

The Singapore River Cruise is 40 minutes from Clarke Quay to the bay; the 7pm sailing is sunset-to-city-lights in one ride, and it is the correct version of this neighbourhood if you have a child or a parent who will not walk. DUCKtours splash down from Suntec if you have a high tolerance for puns. Neither replaces the walk.

Robertson Quay

Upstream, Robertson Quay is the quieter river: restaurants, a lawn, STPI if you want print and paper. The Museum of Ice Cream is not here — it moved to 100 Loewen Road, Dempsey, daily 10am to 6pm, last entry 5:45pm, timed, cashless (museumoficecream.com). Walk Robertson at 5pm for dinner, not for sprinkles. Clarke Quay is ten minutes downriver and you do not have to stop. Fort Canning is the hill above this stretch; the spice garden is free, the Battlebox is a booked tour, and neither needs a cruise.

Satay

Gluttons Bay outside the Esplanade is satay on the water, a different queue from Lau Pa Sat. Lau Pa Sat is the Victorian iron market, Satay Street weekdays 7pm to 3am, weekends 3pm to 3am (laupasat.sg/sataystreet). Pay per stall. Five minutes from the Gallery, the satay people mean after Satay by the Bay closes 1 October 2026. Gluttons is the one with the bay in front of you. Monday to Thursday 4pm to 11pm, last order 10:30pm (esplanade.com / makansutra.com). Pick one. Return the tray.

Walking times

City Hall Exit B to the Gallery: four minutes. Gallery along the water to ACM: eight to ten. ACM across Cavenagh to the Fullerton / Merlion: five. Elgin to Boat Quay: two. Boat Quay to Clarke Quay: eight to ten along the promenade. Clarke Quay to Robertson: another ten to twelve upstream. Esplanade (CC3) is Gluttons Bay. Walk this at dusk. 3pm is the hard hour.

The Singapore River Cruise is about 40 minutes, Monday to Thursday roughly 11am to 10pm, Friday to Sunday and PH roughly 10am to 10:30pm, last departure often 9pm. The official fare is S$28 adult / S$18 child 3–11 on rivercruise.com.sg. The 7pm sailing runs from sunset into the city lights. Clarke Quay Jetty ticket counter is between Blocks C and D. You will pass Cavenagh from the water. It does not replace the walk from ACM across the bridge to the Fullerton.

The bridges

Walk the bridges as a loop, not a cruise. Cavenagh is 1869, five minutes from ACM to the Fullerton. Anderson is the F1 flyover the rest of the year. Coleman is the architect's crossing. Elgin is 1929, lamps, North and South Bridge. Jubilee is step-free to the Esplanade. Clifford Pier is the vaulted hall that used to be the door to the sea. Esplanade Park holds the Cenotaph and the Lim Bo Seng Memorial. Old Hill Street Police Station is 227 coloured windows if you look up from the water. library@esplanade closed 30 June 2023; the scores now live at the National Library on Victoria Street. The performing-arts scores are at the National Library, not in Esplanade Mall.

Planning limits: one cruise. Leave the river by 11pm, or sit in a Chinatown shophouse bar. Marquee is a ticketed indoor wheel.

STPI at 41 Robertson Quay is the indoor hour this stretch actually owns: Monday to Saturday 10am to 7pm, closed Sundays and public holidays, free exhibitions, print and paper, Fort Canning (DT20) Exit A about eight minutes. The gallery closes at 7pm. Eko Nugroho: STRANGE MONSTER VIEW hangs through 10 October 2026 (stpi.com.sg). It is not at Gillman Barracks. Tan Si Chong Su is the clan temple on Magazine Road, ten minutes, elaborately restored, then the quay. Victoria Theatre is the clock tower at the mouth of the river; look at it, buy a ticket only if there is a show. STPI, the river cruise and the Museum of Ice Cream at Dempsey are three separate visits.

Read Bridge is the other crossing between Clarke and Robertson, a minute, the one people use without naming it. Mohamed Sultan is the nightlife strip above Robertson if the quay restaurants have peaked — a different crowd, a later hour, not a tout river. Hong San See is the Hokkien temple on that ridge, a National Monument, quieter than Thian Hock Keng.

If you land 7–13 October 2026, the river-mouth roads are closed. LTA closes Collyer Quay, Esplanade Drive, Raffles Avenue and Bayfront Avenue from 12:01am 7 October to 5:30am 13 October. Cavenagh and Anderson sit on the circuit. The Fullerton lobby is still a walk-through if you are already on this bank. The Singapore River Cruise may truncate or reroute — check rivercruise.com.sg the night before, not at the jetty with a dated ticket. Walk Boat Quay one street back. The cruise can wait until the 13th.

Satay by the Bay is the other grill, and it cooks its last plate on 30 September 2026. Gardens by the Bay closes it from 1 October for Wetlands by the Bay. After that, Gluttons Bay outside the Esplanade is satay on the water, and Satay Street is weekdays 7pm to 3am, weekends 3pm to 3am (laupasat.sg/sataystreet). 3am is close. Pay per stall. Pick one. Return the tray.
