After Dark: Smoke & Mirrors, ATLAS, Ann Siang

Clarke Quay is a colour-graded river with touts. It has a job — first-timers, hens, a river cruise at 7pm — and it does that job loudly. The night that stays with you starts two neighbourhoods away and never needs a menu thrust into your chest. Boat Quay is the original shophouse curve, less neon, more river; walk it at dusk, drink one street back. If the sky is still leaking, ArtScience After Hours runs Friday and Saturday until 9pm, last entry 8:15pm — a lotus instead of a tout, then a walk to Event Plaza for Spectra.

The rooftop

Begin at the National Gallery rooftop. Smoke & Mirrors books sunset for a reason: the Padang, the bay, a drink that does not have to compete with a DJ. Gallery closes at 7pm; the bar does not. From City Hall Exit B you are upstairs in ten minutes if you already have a reservation, twenty if you do not. Dress like you meant to be there.

ATLAS

ATLAS in the Parkview, five minutes on foot, is a three-storey gin cathedral with a spiral staircase that photographs itself. One martini is a visit. Three is a night you will remember in the taxi. The room is Art Deco because it can be. 1-Altitude is 63 floors of actual rooftop and a cover after a certain hour; sunset is the civilised slot, midnight is a different crowd. LOOF above Odeon Towers is fake-grass and no dress-code panic, a starter roof if ATLAS felt like a commitment.

The walk

Then walk. The Civic District to Chinatown is 15 to 20 minutes along the river or through Telok Ayer, and that walk is the point of not getting in a Grab. Ann Siang Hill and Club Street wake up at 6pm; pick a door that is not the loudest. Keong Saik is three blocks of restaurants in former red-light shophouses; book a table, the street is free. Duxton Hill in Blair Plain is quieter still, which is why the chef's table hides there at 7pm.

The rooms

The cocktail rooms are small and they fill. Native is an Asia's 50 Best regular in a tiny Chinatown room — book, drink things made from leftover fruit and obscure distillates, it works. Jigger & Pony on Amoy Street is negronis and a grown-up room, another 50 Best, walk Telok Ayer after. 28 HongKong Street is the masterclass if you would rather shake than hop: two hours, three classics, your homework in a glass. The Chinatown cocktail crawl meets at Chinatown MRT Exit A at 8pm — three shophouse bars and three signatures, on foot from Amoy Street to Bukit Pasoh.

The night

A sequence that actually works. Smoke & Mirrors at 6:30 for the Padang going gold. Walk to ATLAS for one martini, not three. Then 15 to 20 minutes on foot through Telok Ayer to Ann Siang, which is awake by 7:30. Native or Jigger at 9 if you booked. The Chinatown cocktail crawl at 8pm from Chinatown Exit A if you would rather be led. Spectra at 9pm from Event Plaza if the night is a bay night, not a shophouse one — Sunday to Thursday 8 and 9, Friday and Saturday extra 10. Spectra is 8pm and 9pm, plus 10pm on Friday and Saturday. ATLAS is one martini. Pick one roof after.

Robertson Quay

Robertson Quay is upstream from Clarke Quay: better food, fewer touts, STPI if you still want paper at dusk. The Museum of Ice Cream left this quay — 100 Loewen Road, Dempsey, daily 10am to 6pm, last entry 5:45pm (museumoficecream.com). The sprinkle pool is at 100 Loewen Road, Dempsey. Boat Quay is the original shophouse curve, less neon, more river; drink one street back. Gluttons Bay outside the Esplanade is the other satay, on the water, a different queue from Lau Pa Sat. Spectra at Event Plaza is 8pm and 9pm Sunday to Thursday, extra 10pm Friday and Saturday — 15 minutes, free, no booking. Arrive 15 minutes early on weekends.

If the roofs have emptied and you are still hungry, Swee Choon at 183–193 Jalan Besar is the 1962 dim sum that now runs seven days — Sunday to Thursday until 2am, last order 1:30am, Friday and Saturday until 4am last order 3:30am, sweechoon.com. That is Jalan Besar, not Clarke Quay, a 15-minute taxi from Ann Siang, hardware shutters and a steamer. Gluttons Bay is closer if you want satay on the water — Monday to Thursday 4pm to 11pm, last order 10:30pm (esplanade.com / makansutra.com). Satay Street on Boon Tat is weekdays 7pm to 3am, nine carts (laupasat.sg/sataystreet) — 3am is close. Pay per stall. Pick one supper.

Eat before you drink, or after, not instead. Satay Street weekdays 7pm to 3am is five minutes from the Gallery — 3am is close (laupasat.sg/sataystreet). Maxwell is winding down. Smith Street zi char is the late plate. Gluttons Bay outside the Esplanade is the other satay, on the water, a different queue. The night ends when the roofs empty and Telok Ayer is just a street again. Clarke Quay stays lit like a theme park. You do not have to help it.

Old Hill Street Police Station is 227 coloured windows on the river, the walk from the Gallery to Ann Siang if you refuse Clarke Quay. Best from the water. The Arts House is next door. Anderson Bridge is the F1 flyover the rest of the year; walk it at dusk toward Boat Quay. Planning limits

Planning limits: Marquee is a ticketed indoor wheel, and weekends sell out. Zouk at Palawan is a Sentosa taxi. One skybar. Lantern at Fullerton Bay is a booked slot if you want the water; the pool is for looking at unless you are staying.

ArtScience After Hours is the rainy-night swap: Friday and Saturday until 9pm, last entry 8:15pm, marinabaysands.com. Into the Ocean: Journey Beneath runs through 1 November 2026 in the Basement 2 galleries. Then a walk to Event Plaza for Spectra — 8pm and 9pm Sunday to Thursday, extra 10pm Friday and Saturday. The Projector is the anti-multiplex if a film is the point: beanbags, repertory, check which hall. STPI at 41 Robertson Quay closes at 7pm Monday to Saturday. Eko Nugroho: STRANGE MONSTER VIEW still hangs through 10 October 2026, free (stpi.com.sg). ArtScience last entry is 8:15pm on Friday and Saturday. One late ticket that night.

Employees Only is the other tiny room if Native is booked — a New York import that actually cooks, a reservation, not a walk-up at 9:40. Operation Dagger is the basement that still behaves like a secret. Nutmeg & Clove is the Singapore-ingredient room if Native taught you the grammar and you want another round of it. Book. ATLAS and Native remain one room, booked, done. Manhattan Bar at Regent is the other civic martini if ATLAS is a month out. Auld Alliance is whisky in a clubby room. The Other Room is Orchard's basement. If you land 9–11 October, the Padang is a concert fence and Clarke Quay is a tourist trap with a cover charge you did not ask for. Book a roof in Chinatown or sit at Swee Choon on Jalan Besar until 2am — Sunday to Thursday 7am to 2am, last order 1:30am; Friday, Saturday and PH eves to 4am (sweechoon.com). The circuit is not a pub crawl.

Halloween Horror Nights 14 is the other night if a scare is the point and Clarke Quay is still a tout river. Select nights 25 September to 1 November, 7:30pm to 12:30am, from S$68 non-peak (rwsentosa.com). Non-peak nights include 25 and 26 September, then 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 15 and 16 October. A USS day ticket does not get you in. Not recommended under 13. The queues are on the island, not on Ann Siang. ATLAS, the shophouse bars and Halloween Horror Nights are three separate nights.
