Changi Airport layovers
A long layover gives you time to leave Changi, and a shorter one still fits Jewel's waterfall or a rest airside. These answers cover the free Singapore tour, what Jewel asks of transit passengers, where to leave your bags and sleep, and how to spend 3 or 6 hours. Each one makes a pick and points to the story or day plan that goes further.

Can I leave Changi Airport on a long layover?
Yes, if you have 5.5 to 24 hours before your connecting flight, and Changi runs a free 2.5-hour guided Singapore tour for exactly that gap. It runs daily, weekends and public holidays included, and you register in the transit area before clearing arrival immigration. You can enter Singapore only once during the layover, and some passports need a visa, so check entry rules first. The Changi layover tour has the outline.

How do I book the Free Singapore Tour at Changi?
Pre-book one tour on Changi's website up to 50 days ahead, or ask at a booth in the transit area for walk-in seats. Be at the booth at least 90 minutes before the tour starts, with your passport, boarding passes and any entry visa you need. Seats go first come, first served, you can take only one tour, and cigarettes and vapes can't come along.

Which Free Singapore Tour should I pick?
Choose by your flight first, because each tour needs your departure about two hours after it ends. After that, we'd take Heritage and Culture for Chinatown and Kampong Gelam, or Singapore River and Marina Bay Sands for the skyline. City Sights adds the Merlion and Gardens by the Bay, and Sentosa Discovery heads to Universal Studios and Siloso Beach.

What is there to do in Singapore with 6 hours?
With 6 hours, base yourself at Jewel and Changi Village: the Rain Vortex first, then nasi lemak, the coconut rice with sambal, by the sea. We'd keep the city for a longer layover or the free tour, because a trip in and back leaves little room for a meal and a buffer at the gate. Six hours landside lays out the plan.

What can I do in Singapore with 3 free hours in the evening?
With 3 hours, do Marina Bay on foot and trim the loop to one light show. Cross the Helix Bridge, wander the free outdoor gardens by Supertree Grove, and stand for either Garden Rhapsody or Spectra, both free. We'd leave the paid domes and the Flyer for another day. Bay lights on foot has the order and the walking times.

Is the Jewel Rain Vortex free, and when does it run?
Yes, watching the Rain Vortex costs nothing, and the waterfall runs daily from 10am to 10pm. The free Light and Music Showcase plays at 8pm and 9pm from Monday to Thursday, with a 10pm show added from Friday to Sunday, on public holidays and on their eves. We'd catch the 8pm show, because the water looks best lit after dark.

Do I need to clear immigration to visit Jewel?
Yes, if you're transiting at Changi: Jewel sits in the public area between Terminals 2 and 3, so transit passengers can't reach it without entering Singapore. Clearing arrival immigration means meeting the usual entry rules, and Jewel suggests allowing at least 5 hours of transit time. Once you're through, it's open to everyone, residents and travellers alike.

How do I get to Jewel from my terminal at Changi?
From Terminals 2 and 3, Jewel is a 5 to 10-minute walk over a link bridge from the level 2 Departure Hall. Terminal 1 joins it directly through the Arrival Hall on level 1, and Terminal 4 has a free shuttle bus to Jewel from 6am to midnight, with a loop service from 1am to 6am. The Skytrain doesn't stop at Jewel, so walk or take the bus.

Is Jewel's Canopy Park worth the extra ticket?
Only if you want to play: the standard Canopy Park ticket is S$8 and covers the Discovery Slides, Foggy Bowls, Petal Garden and Topiary Walk. The mazes, bridge and nets cost extra, and the slides need a minimum height of 110cm. If you only came for the waterfall, it's free to watch from Forest Valley, so we'd skip the ticket.

Can I store bags or have a shower at Changi Airport?
Yes, Changi has left-baggage counters in all four terminals and Jewel, open 24 hours, and showers at paid lounges and at Hub & Spoke. Storage costs S$6 to S$19 for 24 hours, depending on size, and a pay-per-use shower at Hub & Spoke is S$5. Transit passengers can use the paid lounge showers airside; Hub & Spoke is landside, so it means clearing immigration.

Can I sleep at Changi Airport on a long layover?
Yes, Changi has free snooze lounges in the transit areas of all four terminals, open 24 hours, with seating and charging points. They suit a nap better than a full night, because Changi asks you to keep use short and considerate. For a bed without clearing immigration, book a transit hotel airside.

Is Changi Village worth a detour on a layover?
Yes, with 6 hours or more: Changi Village has a big hawker centre, a beach walk and the bumboat jetty for Pulau Ubin. It's a taxi ride from the airport, so leave a buffer for the trip back. We'd eat nasi lemak, the coconut rice with sambal, at the Changi Village hawker centre, then walk to Changi Beach Park.
