Changi Layover: Jewel, Canopy Park and Changi Point

With a four-hour layover, stay at Jewel. Add Changi Point only if you have 90 minutes for the taxi and return walk. Changi is three places — Jewel, Changi Point, Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal — and only the first one is inside the airport. The Rain Vortex is 40 metres, the world's tallest indoor waterfall, free to watch from the forest valley, daily 10am to 10pm. The light-and-music showcase is 8pm and 9pm Monday to Thursday, plus 10pm Friday to Sunday, public holidays and eves. Stand on the ground floor. You do not need a boarding pass. You do need to know which terminal you came from.

Four hours

Four hours landside: Jewel, and nothing else. Canopy Park on level 5 is the paid mazes and sky nets — Monday to Thursday 10am to 9pm, Friday to Sunday, eves and public holidays 10am to 10pm, last admission 30 minutes prior. Through 30 September 2026, after 5pm is S$4.80 on a Canopy-only ticket. The Experience Studio is Monday to Friday 11am to 8pm, weekends and public holidays 10am to 8pm, last admission 7pm (jewelchangiairport.com/en/attractions/ces.html). Forest Valley is 24 hours. Eat in Jewel or in the terminal you will actually depart from; the walk between T3 and Jewel is the one people cut too fine. Immigration, security and the walk back will eat 60 to 90 minutes if you are not a resident with the right queue. Build that in before you book a maze.

Six hours

Six hours: Jewel plus a taxi to Changi Point. Changi Village hawker is nasi lemak before a boat you are not taking, International Nasi Lemak and the neighbouring stalls, a 6am centre that still works at 11. Changi Beach Park is a 15-minute walk from the village, quieter east-coast sand, kelongs on the horizon. The Changi Chapel & Museum at 1000 Upper Changi Road North is Tuesday to Sunday 9:30am to 5:30pm, last admission 5pm, closed Mondays except public holidays, tourist adult S$9, locals free with NRIC. That is a heavier six hours. Combine chapel and Jewel only if you have the range. Do not combine chapel and a 90-minute buffer.

Ten hours

Ten hours, and only ten: the boat. Changi Point Ferry Terminal at 51 Lorong Bekukong, buses 2, 29, 59, 109 to Changi Village. Bumboats on demand from about 6am to 7pm, S$4 cash, 12 people, 10 minutes to Pulau Ubin. The sunrise kayak meets at 6:15am, which is a layover only if you landed at 4. Otherwise rent a bike at the jetty from about S$8, ride to Chek Jawa, be on the pier by 2pm, vortex at 4, gate at 6. Last boat from Ubin is usually around 7pm. There is no Grab on the island. NParks 1800-471-7300 if the jetty is empty. If your inbound is late, skip Ubin. A mangrove is a poor encore to a missed flight.

Planning limits

What you do not do with a layover. Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal is Bintan, a third taxi, a passport stamp, a last-ferry problem you do not need. Batam is HarbourFront, not here. The butterfly garden is airside in T3 — boarding pass required, 30 minutes, the transit highlight landside visitors will not see. East Coast is a taxi from Jewel and a better six-hour outdoor than a maze, if the cycle or the lagoon is the point. The layover tour exists for people who would rather not invent this in a terminal.

The terminals

Terminal geography, because Maps will lie to you in an airport. Jewel sits on T1. T2 and T3 connect through. T4 is a shuttle. T5 is a construction site you cannot visit. Immigration is the tax. The Skytrain is not a taxi to Changi Village. If you have checked luggage you have not collected, you do not have a layover, you have a connection. Stay landside only if your bags are through or on you.

The village

The version that stays with you is not the vortex, though the vortex is excellent. It is nasi lemak at the village, or a boardwalk over an intertidal flat, or a chapel that does not perform the war. Then the waterfall, because you still have to go back through a mall to reach a gate. Do not reverse it. A mangrove is a poor encore to a maze, and a waterfall is a poor breakfast.

Six hours with range: Jewel plus a taxi to the Changi Chapel at 1000 Upper Changi Road North — Tuesday to Sunday 9:30am to 5:30pm, last admission 5pm, closed Mondays except public holidays, tourist adult S$9, locals free with NRIC — then Johore Battery if you still have forty-five minutes. Do not combine chapel and a 90-minute buffer. Four hours is Jewel and nothing else. Ten hours, and only ten, is the bumboat: S$4 cash, 12 people, 10 minutes to Ubin, be on the pier by 2pm, vortex at 4, gate at 6. Immigration, security and the walk back will eat 60 to 90 minutes. Canopy Park after 5pm is S$4.80 through 30 September 2026 on a Canopy-only ticket; after 1 October check jewelchangiairport.com. The vortex showcase is 8pm and 9pm Monday to Thursday, extra 10pm Friday to Sunday, public holidays and eves. A six-hour evening layover is the vortex plus a maze, not a chapel. A Monday six-hour is Jewel and the village, not the chapel — closed except public holidays. The butterfly garden is still airside in T3. You need a boarding pass. You do not need one for the waterfall.

Little Island Brewing is the village evening if the chapel is a Monday and six hours became a beer. The Navy Museum is not a walk-up some years — check public access before you spend a taxi on it. Canopy Park after 5pm is S$4.80 only through 30 September 2026; from 1 October the fare is whatever jewelchangiairport.com says that morning. The standard Canopy Park ticket itself is S$8 adult or child for the Level 5 gardens and slides — mazes and sky nets are extra (jewelchangiairport.com, September 2026). Four hours is still Jewel and nothing else. Immigration, security and the walk back will still eat 60 to 90 minutes.
