Fort Canning: Spice Garden, Battlebox, 10-Minute Church Walk

The Civic District keeps the national story in former courtrooms. Fort Canning keeps it in a spice garden, a cemetery that became a park, and a bunker nine metres down where the British decided to surrender. Most visitors walk City Hall Exit B to the Gallery and never climb the hill. That is a civic morning. This is the other one. The hill is 22 hectares, 24 hours, NParks last updated 27 January 2026. Dhoby Ghaut is eight to ten minutes uphill. Fort Canning MRT (DT20) is ten. They are not interchangeable with City Hall Exit B.

The hill

Bukit Larangan, the Forbidden Hill, is what the Malays called it when a palace sat on top and ordinary people did not. Raffles put an experimental garden here in 1822, which is why the Botanic Gardens exist at all, further up the ridge. The spice garden on this hill now holds more than 180 varieties of herbs and spices — NParks' own sentence, pandan first if your nose works. Crush a leaf. Guess. The Fort Gate is the last remnant of the colonial fort. Fifteen heritage trees. The ASEAN Sculpture Garden if you like a plaque. The old Christian cemetery became a park the way this city does most of its history: gently, and then all at once.

The Battlebox

The Battlebox is the indoor hour this hill actually owns. Official hours Tuesday to Sunday including public holidays, 10am to 6pm, last entry 5pm, closed Mondays — battlebox.sg, 2 Cox Terrace, Fort Canning Park. Dhoby Ghaut eight minutes; Fort Canning MRT ten; nearest carpark is Fort Canning Park Carpark B. This is where commanders decided, on 15 February 1942, to surrender Singapore. Enhanced experience S$20 adult / S$15 Singaporean or PR, child 5–17 S$15 / S$10: a 40-minute audio tour, two projection rooms, souvenir anaglyph glasses. Basic entry is free with limited slots. Book either. Bring a phone and earphones; limited audio devices loan on-site first-come. Under-4s free, no audio, no glasses. Children 12 and under need a paying adult. No cancellations once booked. It is cool, dim, stairs, not pram-friendly, and it is not a museum blockbuster. Last entry is 5pm.

The gallery

The Fort Canning Heritage Gallery is the free indoor that is not the bunker: artefacts from the 1300s, the hill's own story, typically 10am to 6pm, thirty minutes, almost empty. Wheelchair access to the park is only from the drop-off at the Cox Terrace roundabout — NParks said so. Groups, filming, even a proposal, need a Park Use Request on form.gov.sg. The Tree Tunnel is LTA, not NParks. Do not write to the park about a tunnel.

Guided walks

NParks still runs free guided walks when the calendar is kind. Heritage on the Hill, Saturday 3 October 2026, 10am to 12pm. Trees of the Fort, Saturday 10 October, 10am to 11:30am. The hosted walk is the version with a storyteller if you want names and the bunker as a booked extra. Morning before the heat. The park is free either way. The bunker is the ticket.

The church

Armenian Church at 60 Hill Street is Coleman's 1835 chapel, Singapore's oldest church, free, ten minutes, the garden is the visit. It sits opposite the Peranakan Museum at 39 Armenian Street — daily 10am to 7pm, Fridays until 9pm, last a half-hour before close. Pair the church with the hill, not with a second museum if the bunker has already filled you. The National Museum at 93 Stamford Road is five minutes from Bras Basah Exit B: daily 10am to 7pm, last tickets 6pm. The Singapore History Gallery reopens 10 October 2026; until then treat the building as architecture. Battlebox, the History Gallery and the portraits are three separate afternoons. One museum that afternoon: the Gallery, the History Gallery, or Battlebox.

National Archives at 1 Canning Rise is the reading room of the nation's paper, exhibitions free, 10am to 9pm, staffed weekdays 10am to 6:30pm. Fort Canning is outside. It is for people who like files, which is a smaller club than it should be. Sri Thendayuthapani at Tank Road is the Chettiar temple, Thaipusam's finish line in January, a quiet hall the rest of the year, ten minutes from Dhoby Ghaut toward the river. Shoes off, shoulders covered. It is not Little India. It is the incense this hill never mentions.

Getting there

Dhoby Ghaut (NS24/NE6/CC1) to the park: eight to ten minutes uphill. Fort Canning MRT (DT20): ten. City Hall Exit B to the Gallery is four, and that is a different civic morning. Stamford Road to the National Museum: five from Bras Basah Exit B. Hill Street to Armenian Church: two from the Peranakan Museum. Tank Road to the Chettiar temple: ten from Dhoby Ghaut. Dhoby Ghaut Green is the lawn above the interchange if the hill has wrung you out and you still need grass that is not a spice bed. STPI at 41 Robertson Quay is Monday to Saturday 10am to 7pm, closed Sundays and public holidays, five minutes from Fort Canning MRT along the river.

The morning

A sequence that fits. Spice garden at 8:30, before the heat. Battlebox at 10 when the door unlocks — last entry 5, closed Mondays. Heritage Gallery if the bunker was enough war. Armenian Church at noon. National Museum only if the History Gallery is open and you did not already do the Gallery. Archives only if you like paper. Chettiar temple as a different morning. Bunker, museums, or the spice garden: about 90 minutes each. Battlebox last entry is 5pm, closed Mondays.

Monday on this hill is the park, not the bunker. Battlebox is closed. The spice garden does not close. The Fort Gate does not close. The National Gallery is daily. The National Library at 100 Victoria Street still unlocks at 10. Singapore City Gallery at Maxwell is Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm. Battlebox is closed on Mondays. A Monday here is the spice garden, plus City Gallery from 9am to 5pm.

Planning limits: Fort Canning is a morning on the hill, not a photo on the way to CHIJMES. No flash inside the bunker. Last entry is 5pm. Battlebox, the National Gallery and ArtScience are three separate visits.

Mount Emily Park is the other small hill if Fort Canning was the bunker and you still need grass that is not a spice bed. Dhoby Ghaut is still eight to ten minutes. If you land 7–13 October 2026, Stamford Road is inside the F1 fence; use Coleman, or come from Fort Canning MRT (DT20). The Raffles Arcade is downhill if the bunker was enough war and you want a verandah. A Sling, the bunker and the Gallery are three separate stops.

NParks still lists Heritage on the Hill for Saturday 3 October 2026, 10am to 12pm, and Trees of the Fort for Saturday 10 October, 10am to 11:30am — free when the calendar is kind, book on nparks.gov.sg. The park is open 24 hours. Battlebox is Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm, last entry 5pm (battlebox.sg). The Cenotaph is downhill in Esplanade Park if the spice garden was enough war and you still want a memorial that is not nine metres down — 1922, the Padang, fifteen quiet minutes, City Hall the other door. It is not the Battlebox. Pair it with the hill, not with a second museum if 15 February has already filled you. If you land 7–13 October 2026, Stamford Road is inside the F1 fence; use Coleman, or come from Fort Canning MRT (DT20). The spice garden does not care about a street circuit. The bunker still last-admits at 5.
