Hougang: Japanese Cemetery Park

Punggol and Pasir Ris will sell you a waterway and a mangrove. Hougang Mall will sell you a town centre. Japanese Cemetery Park is the other northeast: 30,000 square metres of gravestones in a private estate on Chuan Hoe Avenue, the largest Japanese cemetery in Southeast Asia, and it is not a picnic. Visit Singapore still says so. The Japanese Association of Singapore keeps the grounds. Daily 7am to 7pm, free (jas.org.sg, opening time 7:00–19:00). Kovan (NE13) is the door. Hougang (NE14) is the mall. They are one North East stop apart and they are not interchangeable with a taxi drop at Heartland Mall.

The cemetery

The cemetery is 825B Chuan Hoe Avenue, Singapore 549854. Founded 1891 as a burial ground for the early Japanese community; a memorial park since 1987. About a thousand graves: civilians, karayuki-san, WWII soldiers, some of the men hanged at Changi. The prayer hall went up in 1986. Dress like a cemetery. No pets. No loud music. No after-hours. Do not picnic on a tomb. Do not fly a drone. Kovan (NE13) then bus 119 or 136 toward Yio Chu Kang Road, alight opposite the old crocodile farm, walk Chuan Hoe. From Hougang (NE14), bus 116. Serangoon (NE12) buses 103 and 109 work if you came from the other direction. It is not a five-minute stroll from the station. It is a residential lane, a playground, then a gate opposite a row of houses.

The hour

Go at opening, or at 5pm when the trumpet trees — Singapore's cheap cherry blossom, late March to early April — are a different season. A Tuesday at 7:15am is the civilised hour. You will share the paths with nobody, which is the point. The bougainvillea arches are the photograph. Hisaichi Terauchi's grave is the WWII footnote if you came for that. The rest is quiet, and it costs nothing. Pack water. There is a vending machine some days.

Breakfast

Kovan 209 at Block 209 Hougang Street 21 is the tray this postcode actually breakfasts at. NEA's 23 July 2026 list still calls it Kovan Market & Food Centre. Built 1983, a wet market and cooked food, Kovan (NE13) a few minutes, not Hougang Mall. Aljunied-Hougang Town Council The next closure is 16 to 20 November 2026 (ahtc.sg). Stall clocks still win when they are up. Yam Mee Teochew Fishball Noodle at #01-35 is the bak chor mee people still name — typically 7am to 3pm. Yi Shi Jia Wanton Mee at #01-57 typically 7:30am to 4:30pm, closed Mondays. Chai Kee Prawn Noodle at #01-66 typically 6:30am to 2pm. Return the tray. A drinks stall here went viral in September 2026 for cash-only signs that said no PayNow, no PayLah, no CDC. Bring notes.

The other tray

Hougang 6/7 is the other heartland breakfast if you are already on this side of the North East and Kovan was a snack. Stall clocks win. It is not Old Airport Road. Hougang 6/7, Kovan 209 and the cemetery are three separate stops.

The cemetery, Coney Island and Punggol Waterway are three separate mornings. A sequence that actually works: Kovan 209 at 7 if Yam Mee is open that day and the centre is not washing. Cemetery at 9 while the paths are empty, off by 5, last look 7. Chomp Chomp at 20 Kensington Park Road if the evening is stingray — Serangoon Gardens, reopened 27 January 2026 after a three-month NEA upgrade, a taxi from Kovan, not a stroll. Jalan Kayu is the prata this northeast still names, a short taxi, a night, not a cemetery breakfast.

Kampong Lorong Buangkok is Singapore's last mainland kampong, 7 Lorong Buangkok, still lived-in, privately owned, no ticket. Buangkok (NE15) is one stop north of Hougang. Walk the public path in daylight, in a small group, quietly. Do not peer into houses. Zinc roofs are someone's home. Sengkang Riverside is the next town's river, 21.3 hectares, 24 hours, Kupang LRT. A section of track is closed for pipe laying until 31 December 2026. None of these is Chuan Hoe. Pair the kampong with the cemetery only if you have the range and the clothes. The cemetery, the kampong and Sengkang Riverside are three separate visits. Sengkang Riverside Park is 21.3 hectares, open 24 hours, at Anchorvale; pipe-laying runs through 31 December 2026 (Sengkang Riverside Park).

Walking times

Kovan (NE13) to 209: a few minutes. Kovan to the cemetery: a bus, then Chuan Hoe. Hougang (NE14) to the mall: you are already in it. Hougang to the cemetery on bus 116: the useful door if you came off at the town centre. Buangkok (NE15) to Lorong Buangkok: a walk or bus toward Yio Chu Kang Road. Kovan to Chomp Chomp: a taxi. None of these is Punggol Coast (NE18). Pack water.

Monday

Monday on this corner is still a cemetery morning. The park is daily 7am to 7pm. Yi Shi Jia at 209 is the Monday that is closed. Yam Mee typically runs. Point Park stays closed through December 2027. A Monday here is a 7:15am hall and a tray that is still serving.

A sequence that fits. 209 at 7 if the centre is open that day. The next washing closure is 16 to 20 November 2026. Cemetery at 9. Off by 5. Chomp Chomp at 6 if stingray is the evening. Jalan Kayu only if the night is this postcode. Pasir Ris Central is a different northeast tray, a different MRT line, a mangrove lunch. Pasir Ris boardwalk: 1.5km, 1–2 hours; start at Area 2 near carpark C (Pasir Ris Park). Punggol Waterway Park is 25.79 hectares, open 24 hours (Punggol Waterway). This is the town between them that the hop-on bus never sold.

Geylang Bahru at 69 Geylang Bahru is the other Kallang tray if you came off at DT24 instead: Hui Wei Chilli Ban Mian, typically Saturday to Thursday 11:30am to 9:30pm, closed Fridays. It is not Kovan. It is two Downtown stops and a different grammar. Yam Mee, Hui Wei and the cemetery are three separate stops.

Planning limits

Planning limits: the cemetery is a park, not a mall annex. No drones over the graves. Start in the morning in September. Do not sit on a tomb. Coney, the cemetery and Settlement are three separate outings.
