The West Is for Science, Snow and Hell

The west is where Singapore put the science, the snow, and the tiger-balm fever dream. None of it is convenient to the bay, which is why it is uncrowded. Budget the MRT time. Jurong East (NS1/EW24) is the hub. Jurong is a family day or an oddities day. It is not a food pilgrimage.

Science Centre

Science Centre Singapore is Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, last entry 4:15pm, closed Mondays except public holidays and gazetted school holidays (science.edu.sg/visit-us/opening-hours). Eight-minute walk from Jurong East MRT. Hands-on galleries. KidsSTOP is the children's gallery next door at 21 Jurong Town Hall Road — not inside the Science Centre halls. Session A 10am to 1pm, last entry 12:15pm; closed 1pm to 2pm for disinfection; Session B 2pm to 5pm, last entry 4:15pm. Under-8s; an adult 18 or older must come; socks for Dream Climber, Small World and Little Ant Kingdom. Pre-book; walk-ups bounce; adults without a child are not admitted. The Omni-Theatre next door is the dome film; book a slot, arrive ten minutes early. Snow City is Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm, last entry 4pm for one-hour snow play and 3pm for two-hour snow play (science.edu.sg/visit-us/opening-hours). Last operating day is still 30 September 2026 after 26 years. The remaining real ice is not in this west: Kallang Ice World at Leisure Park, 5 Stadium Walk Level 3, Stadium (CC6) Exit B. The Rink at JCube closed August 2023. Two-hour slots from about S$20 adult / S$18 child 5–12. Gloves. That is a Circle Line hop, not a JEM annex.

Haw Par Villa

Haw Par Villa is the adult weird: 1,000 statues, Chinese mythology, the Ten Courts of Hell. The outdoor park has been partially closed for maintenance since 8 December 2025; hawparvilla.sg still says until further notice. Hell's Museum — the ticketed, curated layer, daily 10am to 6pm, last entry 5pm (hawparvilla.sg) — has stayed open, Ten Courts included. 10am is the museum. Haw Par Villa MRT (CC25) is a one-minute walk. The Ten Courts are graphic. Preview if you have kids. The rest, when the park is fully back, is colourful and strange in a way nothing else in Southeast Asia attempts.

The dinosaurs

Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum at NUS has three real sauropod skeletons and 2,000 specimens of Southeast Asian wildlife. The best-kept museum secret in the country. Book weekends. NUS Museum next door is free. Combine them. Kent Ridge MRT (CC24) plus a campus walk, or a taxi from Haw Par Villa if you are already in the west. Chinese Garden and Japanese Garden are the pagoda-and-lantern pair by the lake; Jurong Lake Gardens is the third national garden, free, with Forest Ramble — a playground that actually works, closed every Monday for maintenance except public holidays. Forest Ramble is closed every Monday except public holidays. 8am is Forest Ramble — SkatePark the same 8am to 10pm, Clusia Cove 8am to 7pm (juronglakegardens.nparks.gov.sg/operating-hours-and-services).

Ice

Kallang Ice World is the remaining real ice now that Snow City is going: Leisure Park Kallang Level 3, Stadium Exit B, not JCube. The Rink at JCube closed August 2023. Two-hour slots from about S$20 adult. It is not this west. A skate and the Science Centre are separate mornings. Singapore Discovery Centre in Jurong is more story than Tesla coil — nation-building, flight sims, a kids' city, not a substitute for Science Centre. West Coast Park is the west's East Coast: BBQ pits, a huge playground, tankers on the horizon — 50 hectares, 24 hours, nine pits you book, Area 1 footpath closed through 31 December 2026 (nparks.gov.sg). Kent Ridge Park is the west end of the Southern Ridges, a canopy walk, combine with Reflections at Bukit Chandu if you still have legs.

Jurong East (NS1/EW24) is eight minutes on foot to Science Centre. Haw Par Villa (CC25) is a one-minute walk to the Ten Courts. Kent Ridge (CC24) plus a campus walk, or a taxi, for the dinosaurs. Chinese Garden (EW25) for the lake. These are not one stop. Budget 25 to 40 minutes from City Hall, more from the east. Live Turtle Museum is not this west — it left Chinese Garden in 2018, left ORTO in 2025, and reopened 23 August 2026 at 11 Chencharu Close in Yishun, a ten-minute walk from Khatib (NS14) Exit B. Closed Tuesdays. The turtles are at 11 Chencharu Close, closed Tuesdays. They are not at Jurong East. Clementi 448 is the hawker if you are already on the East-West line and refuse JEM.

The lake

JEM and Westgate will feed you. Do not plan a dining itinerary. Jurong Lake Gardens is 90 hectares, free, Singapore's first national gardens outside the centre. Lakeside Garden is open 24 hours; Chinese Garden and Japanese Garden run 5:30am to midnight (juronglakegardens.nparks.gov.sg/operating-hours-and-services). Forest Ramble and SkatePark at Lakeside are Tuesday to Sunday and public holidays 8am to 10pm; Clusia Cove the same days 8am to 7pm — closed every Monday for maintenance except public holidays, and if Monday was a PH they close Tuesday instead. 8am those rooms are open — Forest Ramble, SkatePark, Clusia Cove. Dog Run daily 8am to 10pm. Info counters 8:30am (juronglakegardens.nparks.gov.sg/operating-hours-and-services). The lawns stayed. PAssion Wave @ Jurong Lake Gardens is Tuesday to Friday 9am to 6pm, closed Mondays and public holidays — 9am is that kayak counter, not the Bedok Wednesday-to-Sunday board. NParks is trialling a free garden shuttle on a loop, 9am to 12pm and 4pm to 7pm from South Carpark (go.gov.sg/jlgcruiserservice). Chinese Garden MRT (EW25) is about five minutes to the Chinese Garden Bridge; Lakeside (EW26) is about three minutes to Lakeside Plaza. Go early, before the heat. Complimentary highlight tours start 10:30am, then 12:15pm, 1:30pm, 2:45pm and 4:15pm. Why come

The west rewards the traveller who is tired of the bay and willing to ride the train to the end of the line for dinosaurs and a garden with nobody in it. Science Centre plus Hell's Museum is a day. Science Centre plus the lake gardens is a gentler one. All three plus the dinosaurs is a long afternoon. Snow City's last day is 30 September 2026. West Coast Park is 24 hours in the way East Coast is: BBQ pits, a huge playground, tankers on the horizon, not a museum. The dedicated morning lives in West Coast Park. Monday is the west's closed day. Science Centre is Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm, last entry 4:15pm, closed Mondays except public holidays and gazetted school holidays — science.edu.sg. KidsSTOP is the same days, two sessions, 1pm to 2pm closed for disinfection, adults without a child bounce. Lee Kong Chian is also closed Mondays. Hell's Museum is daily 10am to 6pm, last entry 5pm. Snow City is closed on typical Mondays (snowcity.com.sg/operating-hours). Lakeside Garden is 24 hours, but Forest Ramble, SkatePark, Clusia Cove, Bonsai Gallery, Jurong Lake Gardens Gallery and Breathing Gallery are closed every Monday for maintenance except public holidays (juronglakegardens.nparks.gov.sg/operating-hours-and-services). If you landed on a Monday, walk the lake or do Haw Par Villa's ticketed courts before 5, The playgarden rooms are closed on a typical Monday. 8am those rooms are open — Forest Ramble and SkatePark 8am to 10pm, Clusia Cove 8am to 7pm.

Chinese Garden reopened 8 September 2025 inside Jurong Lake Gardens: Grand Arch, Twin Pagoda typically 7am to 10pm — Cloud Pagoda on controlled access, Bonsai Gallery Tuesday to Sunday 9am to 7pm, closed Mondays (NParks). Lakeside Garden is 24 hours; Chinese Garden and Japanese Garden run 5:30am to midnight. Chinese Garden MRT (EW25) is about five minutes to the bridge; Lakeside (EW26) is about three to Lakeside Plaza. Live Turtle Museum is not on this lake. 11 Chencharu Close, Yishun, daily 10am to 6pm except Tuesdays, last entry around 5:40pm, tourist from S$16 / locals from S$11 (turtle-tortoise.com). Khatib Exit B, ten minutes. Sembawang Hot Spring: 7am–7pm; cascading pool closed Mondays and Thursdays 11am–2pm (Sembawang Hot Spring). The pagoda, Science Centre and Hell's Museum are three separate visits. One west per visit, about 90 minutes, plus the East-West ride from town.

Lights by the Lake is the west's mid-autumn, and it is free: lanterns at Lakeside Field, Chinese and Japanese Gardens, 6:30pm to 10:30pm, 19 September to 4 October 2026 (NParks / lightsbythelake.nparks.gov.sg). Festival programming 19–27 September; lanterns stay up through 4 October. This year's story is The Legend of the White Snake — five scenes along Lakeside Field, Bai Suzhen to Xu Xian, Broken Bridge to Fa Hai. Cloud Pagoda light show those nights 7:30pm to 10pm every 30 minutes, last show 10pm. Sunken Garden in the Japanese Garden is lit 7:30pm to 10:30pm, 19–27 September. Open flames and sparklers are banned; the gardens are smoke-free. Go car-lite — Lakeside (EW26) is the door; Chinese Garden (EW25) is the other. A paramedic sits at the Entrance Pavilion through 27 September. Wan Qing Yuan — Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall — brought its Mid-Autumn here because the villa is closed for restoration until 2027. After 4 October this listing is historical. The lanterns, Science Centre and Hell's Museum are three separate visits. Chinatown's community lanterns at Kreta Ayer are the other display, not a corridor over New Bridge. The giant Fenbao sets at Gardens by the Bay come down 27 September. This lake keeps its snakes until 4 October.

Snow City is Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm, last entry 4pm for one-hour snow play and 3pm for two-hour snow play (science.edu.sg/visit-us/opening-hours). Snow City is closed on a typical Monday. Last operating day is 30 September 2026 after 26 years — Science Centre Board said so, farewell packages from S$19 adult. After that date this listing is historical. The remaining real ice is Kallang Ice World at Leisure Park, Stadium (CC6) Exit B — two-hour slots from about S$20 adult, The Rink at JCube closed August 2023. It is not this west. Kallang Riverside Park: 5 hectares, open 24 hours (Kallang). Science Centre stays Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm, last entry 4:15pm, closed typical Mondays (science.edu.sg). KidsSTOP is two sessions at 21 Jurong Town Hall Road. Adults without a child bounce. That is a west that still works when the snow is gone.

Hell's Museum is still the indoor west that does not take Monday off: daily 10am to 6pm, last entry 5pm, adult S$22 / child 7–12 S$12, under-6s free, not recommended under 9 (hawparvilla.sg). Complimentary highlight tours at 10:30am, 12:15pm, 1:30pm, 2:45pm and 4:15pm — register at the lobby, first-come. The outdoor park stays partially closed from 8 December 2025 until further notice. Haw Ror Villa 5 is the other night on this hill: selected evenings 8 October to 15 November 2026, 6:30pm to midnight (hawrorvilla.com). It is not HHN and it is not a Science Centre evening.
