Kranji, the Countryside 5%

Most Singaporeans have never been. Kranji is goat farms, frog farms, a banana-leaf farm bistro, and a wetland reserve with estuarine crocodiles. It is the 5% of the island that still looks like a map from 1970. Kranji MRT (NS7), then bus 925 (925M on Sundays and public holidays) to Sungei Buloh, or a taxi to the farms. There is no graceful way to DIY three farms on a bus. That is why the countryside tour exists.

Sungei Buloh

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is the real draw if you like birds. Free. Daily 7am to 7pm, last entry 6:30pm, 202 hectares, an ASEAN Heritage Park. Arrive at opening. Crocodiles from the boardwalk, at a distance; this is not a zoo, do not leave the path. Migratory season is September to March — plovers, sandpipers, birds that have come from as far as Siberia. Binoculars. Light-coloured long sleeves. Mosquito sense every month of the year. Platform 1 is closed for upgrading from 6 June to 23 October 2026 (nparks.gov.sg). Stay on the boardwalk while that hide is closed.

Two doors

The reserve is two visitor centres and a decision. The main entrance on Neo Tiew Crescent is the one the bus actually serves; Kranji Nature Trail from the Kranji Reservoir side is a different walk and a different bus stop. Give yourself three hours if you want the mangrove boardwalk and a hide, not forty minutes between farms. NParks runs guided walks on the events calendar — book them, do not assume a naturalist is waiting at the gate. The crocodiles are estuarine and they are why the signs exist. Stay on the boardwalk.

The farm

Bollywood Veggies is ten acres at 100 Neo Tiew Road, still branded that way in listings, Bollywood Farms on the gate. Poison Ivy is the farm lunch. Official hours on bollywoodfarms.com/contact-us: Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 7am to 6pm; Wednesday to Friday 10am to 3pm; Monday to Thursday private pre-booked events and private dining only. On Monday to Thursday, Poison Ivy is private dining only. Hay Dairies is goats, and it is open this Monday. Jurong Frog Farm has been closed to the public since February 2023 — jurongfrogfarm.com.sg, SLA locked the Lim Chu Kang gate. The tour strings them together in five hours so you are not standing on Neo Tiew Crescent waiting for a bus that comes twice. Nothing else is nearby. Plan around one meal, and not this Monday.

The goats

Hay Dairies at 250 Neo Tiew Crescent is goats and milk, 9am to 4pm Monday and Wednesday to Sunday, closed every Tuesday (haydairies.sg/contact-us). Milking is roughly 9am to 10:30am. Walk-ins under ten; groups of ten or more book and pay. Hay Dairies is open on Mondays. Poison Ivy is not. Qian Hu is ornamental fish, a gallery, a farm-turned-attraction that kids tolerate longer than a boardwalk. Neither is a reason to skip Sungei Buloh; both are a reason not to DIY three properties on bus 925. If you only have a morning, the wetlands at 7am and Hay Dairies at 9 is the Monday that still works; a Poison Ivy table at 11:30 is the greed for a public farm day. If you only have an afternoon, pick the memorial or the farm, not both.

The memorial

The Kranji War Memorial is rows of Commonwealth headstones overlooking the strait. Free, quiet, dress respectfully, a different register from a goat-feeding. Pair it with the wetlands, not with a farm lunch selfie. There is no cafe on the ridge; bring water. Mandai is the next ridge and a different day — orangutans, not milky storks. Kids will like the farms and tolerate Sungei Buloh if they are the patient kind. Everyone else should come for the birds and the feeling, rare on this island, that the horizon is not a condo.

The marshes

Kranji Marshes is the other wetland, a different hide, a different bus, and not a substitute for Sungei Buloh if migratory birds are why you came. The guided walk is NParks on the events calendar — book it, do not assume a naturalist is waiting at the gate. Jurong Frog Farm is a locked gate since February 2023 (jurongfrogfarm.com.sg). Oh Farms is the other smallholding. Kranji MRT (NS7) then bus 925 (925M on Sundays and public holidays) is the wetlands door; the farms are a taxi or the tour. Kranji War Cemetery at 9 Woodlands Road is daily 8am to 6pm, free, Commonwealth War Graves Commission, about 10 to 15 minutes on foot from Kranji MRT (NS7) — or buses 160, 170, 178, 960, 961 two stops along Woodlands Road. There are steps and no food or toilets on the ridge; use the station first. It shares a station with the wetlands, not a mood. Don't rush either.

When to go

Go on a weekday in migratory season if you can choose — September to March, plovers and sandpipers that have come from as far as Siberia. The day after a public holiday is a carpark argument. Pack DEET, a hat, and the humility to turn around if the sky goes black — this is mangrove, and lightning here is not a vibe. Kranji does not have a mall to duck into. That is the whole attraction.

Kranji Reservoir Park is the other water, a sand bar, not the war memorial and not the wetland. Do not treat it as Sungei Buloh. Japanese Cemetery Park is the largest Japanese cemetery in Southeast Asia — Hougang, not this ridge, a quiet hall, dress respectfully, a different morning if wartime history is why you came and the wetlands are a Monday you cannot do. Sembawang Hot Spring is the other north, and it is not a crocodile. 1.1 hectares, 7am to 7pm (NParks), Singapore's only natural hot spring, cascading foot bath closed Mondays and Thursdays 11am to 2pm for cleaning. No carpark on site; 114 Yishun Ring Road is 450 metres, eight minutes. Bring your own pail. The water comes out around 70°C; the sulphur is the point. Groups over 20 need a permit. Weekend queues are a different sport. It shares a compass with Kranji, not a bus. Go at opening, or after 2, or pick the wetland and skip the toes.

Lim Chu Kang Nature Park is the other west-north patch if the wetlands are a carpark argument: a quieter NParks hold, mosquitoes included, not a crocodile boardwalk. Green Circle Eco Farm is the smallholding if Bollywood Veggies is a different day. Migratory season at Sungei Buloh is still September to March. Chong Pang Market is the north hawker if the farms were a morning and you still want a tray that is not Poison Ivy. Yishun Pond is the other north water: 2.3 hectares behind Khoo Teck Puat, 24 hours, a 14.5-metre spiral tower, not a crocodile boardwalk. Woodlands Waterfront is 11 hectares along Admiralty Road West, 24 hours, a 400-metre jetty NParks still calls the northernmost point of mainland Singapore (nparks.gov.sg, last updated 27 January 2026). Woodlands North (TE1) is the door, about 12 minutes on foot — not Woodlands MRT (NS9), and not the checkpoint. Carpark on Admiralty West Road: 112 car lots, 27 motorcycle, 3 handicapped; no fees 6:30am to 8:30am, fees the rest of the clock. Only fish in designated areas. Do not feed the macaques. The playground was revamped May 2026. Rasa Istimewa on the jetty is typically noon to 11:30pm, so a morning jetty is vending machines and Johor. Admiralty Park is the rainforest fragment behind the HDB. Woodlands 888 is the other north tray. Woodlands Regional Library is the indoor hour if the sky opens. The dedicated jetty lives in Woodlands Waterfront. Bus 925 from Kranji (NS7) remains the wetlands door. One half-day: Sungei Buloh, Bollywood Farms, or the beach jetty. Farms need a taxi or shuttle off Kranji MRT.

Official hours 7am to 7pm; cascading foot bath closed Mondays and Thursdays 11am to 2pm for cleaning (nparks.gov.sg, last updated 27 January 2026). 1.1 hectares along Gambas Avenue. No carpark on site; 114 Yishun Ring Road is 450 metres, eight minutes. Canberra (NS12) is the station NParks lists. Water emerges at 70°C and cools through four tiers to about 40°C at the toes. Bring a pail. Groups over 20 need a permit. High visitorship weekday evenings 4pm to 7pm and all day on weekends. It shares a compass with Kranji, not a bus. Sungei Buloh and the foot bath are separate mornings. On Monday the cascading pool is closed 11am to 2pm.
