MacRitchie Never on a Monday

The Botanic Gardens are orchids, otters and a lawn concert. This neighbourhood also contains the actual rainforest, and collapsing the two into a 'nature morning' is how you spend 11am in a taxi arguing about shoes. MacRitchie is boots. Bukit Timah is a summit. The gardens are a different day. Pick one.

Venus Drive

Start at Venus Drive. Windsor Nature Park is the back door to the Central Catchment: boardwalks, fewer people, a carpark that opens 7am and closes 7pm. From here the hike to the HSBC TreeTop ranger station is about 2.5 kilometres, 45 to 60 minutes. Lornie Road / Mushroom Cafe is the other door and a longer one — 4 to 5 kilometres, 60 to 90 minutes. The dawn trek puts a former NParks naturalist on the trail with binoculars. You will actually see the colugo instead of a sign about the colugo.

The bridge

The TreeTop Walk itself is 250 metres of free-standing suspension bridge, 25 metres up, one-way, between Bukit Peirce and Bukit Kalang. Free. NParks hours: Tuesday to Friday 9am to 5pm; weekends and public holidays 8:30am to 5pm; last entry 4:45pm. Closed Mondays except public holidays. The gate at the ranger station is the one that turns people around at 4:50 after they have already walked an hour. Do not be those people. The nature reserve itself is 7am to 7pm; staying after 7 is prohibited, and they mean it. 9am is the TreeTop Walk — Tuesday to Friday 9am to 5pm, last entry 4:45pm, closed Mondays except public holidays. Weekend and PH opening is 8:30am; this is a weekday.

The macaques

Hide food. Do not stare down the macaques. Do not run. Lightning closes the bridge and you should not be under 25-metre trees in a squall arguing with a long-tailed macaque about a granola bar. The MacRitchie kayak is the other morning if the bridge is a Monday: still water, monkeys on the bank, usually a morning slot only, a different muscle from the Ubin mangrove.

Bukit Timah

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is the other hill and a third pair of legs. 163 hectares, an ASEAN Heritage Park, Singapore's highest natural point at 163 metres. Open 7am to 7pm, free, pets not allowed. 7am is the reserve (nparks.gov.sg/visit/parks/park-detail/bukit-timah-nature-reserve). Beauty World MRT (DT5), then 10 to 15 minutes on foot to Hindhede Drive. NParks has demolition works at the summit from July 2026 into March 2028 — check nparks.gov.sg before you count on the top. Groups over 30 need a permit a month ahead. Hindhede is the quarry lake at the foot, easier than the summit road, macaques included. Dairy Farm is the Wallace Trail and a gentler hill.

Ford Factory

Former Ford Factory, where the surrender was signed on 15 February 1942, is the indoor hour on this ridge and almost never crowded. Do it after the hill, not instead of it. The Rail Corridor through Bukit Timah Railway Station is the photogenic slice of the old KTM line if you still need to walk. Neither pairs with the Botanic Gardens in the same morning. The gardens take a slow 7am. MacRitchie takes a 7am at Venus Drive. Bukit Timah takes water and the humility to turn around if the summit is a worksite.

Getting there

Caldecott (CC17/TE9) or Marymount (CC16) plus a walk or bus gets you toward Venus Drive if you refuse a taxi. Buses 52, 74, 93, 130, 132, 162, 165, 166, 167, 852, 855, 980 run along Lornie Road for the Mushroom Cafe door. There is no MRT that dumps you at the ranger station. That is the point. Pack water. There is nothing to eat on the trail that a macaque will not take first.

The MacRitchie kayak is the other morning if the bridge is a Monday: still water, macaques on the bank, usually a morning slot only — rental windows have been 9am to 10:30am and 2pm to 4:30pm, confirm before you drag a child to the pontoon. A different muscle from the Ubin mangrove.

The TreeTop Walk is Tuesday to Friday 9am to 5pm; weekends and public holidays 8:30am to 5pm; last entry 4:45pm; closed Mondays except public holidays. 9am is the bridge. The nature reserve is 7am to 7pm; staying after 7 is prohibited. Venus Drive carpark is 7am to 7pm. From Venus Drive to the ranger station is about 2.5 kilometres, 45 to 60 minutes. Bukit Brown is the other forest on this ridge: graves, macaques, history the city almost paved over. Go with respect, no picnics on tombs, a guide if you can. It is not MacRitchie and it is not the Rail Corridor. Former Ford Factory is Tuesday to Sunday 9am to 5:30pm, last admission 5pm, closed Mondays, Hume Exit 1 three minutes, tourist adult S$7.13. The TreeTop Walk is the Monday that is closed. The surrender room is the Monday that is also closed. Pick a Tuesday. Venus Drive to the ranger station is still 2.5 kilometres, 45 to 60 minutes. Last entry 4:45pm. Do not argue with a ranger.

Planning limits

Planning limits: start by 9am. The TreeTop Walk is closed Mondays except public holidays. The Botanic Gardens and the TreeTop Walk are separate mornings. Jacob Ballas is a different door, Napier or Botanic Gardens MRT, and its Tree House is closed for termites until around the end of 2027. One green morning is the gardens at 7 and the Orchid Garden at 8:30.

Monday alternatives on this ridge, because you will invent the day anyway. Rifle Range Nature Park is 7am to 7pm, 66 hectares, Colugo Deck 31 metres above the old Sin Seng Quarry, pets banned, more than 7 kilometres of trail — NParks, not a closed bridge. Thomson Nature Park is the Hainanese village ruins, a pair with Windsor. Kong Meng San at Bright Hill (TE7) is the monastery five minutes from the station, free, no indoor photography. The Zoo at Mandai is 8:30am to 6pm, Mondays included. Pick one. Rifle Range, the Zoo and Kong Meng San are three separate Mondays.

Chestnut Nature Park is the other Monday forest: hiking and bike loops on the Central Catchment edge, 7am to 7pm, pets banned in the nature-park bits. Part of Blue Quail Trail is closed for slope repair through December 2026 — access the rest via Black Crawler opposite Piper Hut (nparks.gov.sg). Lower Pierce is 10 hectares on Old Upper Thomson Road, park 24 hours except the boardwalk 7am to 7pm. That boardwalk is closed for maintenance until 30 September 2026; use Casuarina or Jacaranda for the rest, and do not treat it as the TreeTop Walk on a Monday (nparks.gov.sg). The TreeTop Walk stays Tuesday to Friday 9am to 5pm, weekends and PH 8:30am to 5pm, last entry 4:45pm, closed Mondays except public holidays. Bidadari Park is the easier Monday green: 24 hours, Alkaff Lake, Woodleigh (NE11), a new town on an old cemetery, not a suspension bridge. Upper Peirce is the quieter water if Venus Drive is a carpark argument — 5 hectares, 7am to 7pm, pets banned, free 67-lot carpark on Old Upper Thomson Road, Lentor (TE5) the nearest station (nparks.gov.sg). Otter spotting is a rumour with a map, not a booking — Bishan-AMK and the gardens are the usual luck. An NParks guided walk is free when the calendar is kind. The TreeTop Walk stays closed Mondays except public holidays. Venus Drive to the ranger station is still 2.5 kilometres, 45 to 60 minutes. Do not argue with a ranger.

MacRitchie Reservoir Park is the Lornie Road door, and it is not Venus Drive. NParks: the park and trails typically 7am to 7pm; the HSBC TreeTop Walk is free but closed Mondays and listed separately. Mushroom Cafe is this entrance. The hike to the ranger station from here is 4 to 5 kilometres, 60 to 90 minutes. Venus Drive is the short TreeTop approach through Windsor. Last entry is 4:45pm, so leave the Lornie Road carpark before 3pm. Paddle Lodge kayaks are the other morning if the bridge is a Monday — confirm the slot before you drag a child to the pontoon.
