East Coast Park After the Tiles

Start here

Start at East Coast Park Area C4, then cycle toward the lagoon or Bedok. East Coast Park is a different day from the Katong shophouses. Thirteen kilometres of coast, BBQ pits, rental bikes, a lagoon for swimming, and a seafood centre for chilli crab or black pepper. East Coast Park is open 24 hours; shophouses follow separate posted hours. Katong and the park need separate mornings. Katong and Joo Chiat is the neighbourhood; this is the water it sits on.

Sunrise

The sunrise cycle meets at 6:30am. Start then for the quietest morning; GoCycling opens at 8am. Kopi after, at a stall that has been pouring it since before the park connector had a name. You can DIY it. GoCycling Area C4: daily 8am to 10pm; adult single from S$10/hr (gocycling.sg). A helmet if you have any sense, the path that runs from Marine Cove toward Bedok. Ride toward the airport if you want planes on final approach over the water. Ride the other way if you want the lagoon and the food village. Use the signed park connector; East Coast Parkway is a highway.

The lagoon

The lagoon is the swimming spot. The open beach is for sitting, cycling and BBQ. East Coast Lagoon Food Village is stingray, satay and coconut on the sand, no booking, cash still useful, a tray-return rack like every other hawker. Go at 11:30 or 5:30, not 1pm. Jumbo at East Coast Seafood Centre, 1206 East Coast Parkway, is the chilli crab people mean, and it cooks its last plate on 30 September 2026. NParks is redeveloping the centre; Jumbo opened here in 1987; the other rooms are not this park (Straits Times / CNA). The last plate is 30 September 2026. Long Beach is leaving the same stretch for Coastal PlayGrove — confirm the live pin on longbeachseafood.com.sg. Palm Beach and Red House are the other rooms until the centre actually empties. Pick one crab. Pick one table at the seafood centre.

Getting there

Marine Parade MRT (TE26) is the closest to East Coast Road and the shophouses, not the sand. The park itself is a short taxi, a bus along the East Coast Parkway spine, or the park connector if you already have a bike. Dakota (CC8) is Old Airport Road, ten minutes from the tiles, a different breakfast. Eunos (EW7) or Paya Lebar (EW8/CC9) plus a bus if you are coming from the east-west line.

On the water, not beside it: the kayak and SUP launches from the lagoon side, beginner-proof in the morning, a different sport when the afternoon sea breeze stands the chop up. Windsurf is the east-coast original, not a Sentosa add-on. East Coast fishing is the uncle-with-a-rod version of the same water. The Sentosa SUP at Tanjong is a separate booking.

The order

When the tiles are the morning and the park is the afternoon, walk it in that order. The Peranakan walk meets at 112 Katong at 9:30. Kueh, laksa, Koon Seng before the coaches. Then a taxi or the connector to the lagoon for 1pm stingray, or a booked crab at 7. Wild Wild Wet in Pasir Ris is the east-side waterpark if the lagoon is not wet enough: Monday to Friday 12pm to 6pm last admission 5pm, closed Tuesdays, weekends and school holidays 11am to 6pm, off-peak adult S$29 (wildwildwet.com, September 2026). It is not Adventure Cove. It is also not this park. The mangrove next door lives in Pasir Ris Park. Forest Adventure is high ropes over Bedok Reservoir, closed shoes, morning booking, a different east.

Sunset

Stay for the light. East Coast sunset faces tankers on the horizon and planes into Changi, with the city behind you. BBQ pits fill from 5pm on weekends; weekday evenings are almost empty. The night cycle is the same path without the heat. Changi Point is further east if you still have a morning: nasi lemak and a bumboat. Ubin is a separate morning from a 6:30am ride and a chilli crab.

Hours

The park is open 24 hours. The lagoon is the swimming spot; the open beach is for sitting, cycling and BBQ. The sunrise cycle starts in the park at 6:30am. Jumbo is a booking. Long Beach is the black-pepper rival. Pick one crab. Weekend queues at the seafood centre are a sport of their own.

Marine Parade Food Centre is the residents' lunch if the lagoon is a different hour. Haig Road and Dunman are the other east trays. Bedok Reservoir is the other east water, a park connector, not the lagoon; Forest Adventure is high ropes over it, closed shoes, morning booking. Fort Tanjong Katong is the buried fort in Katong Park, a plaque more than a ruin. The 6:30am cycle starts in the park.

Planning limits

Planning limits: use the lagoon for swimming, avoid a noon ride in September, and choose Jumbo or Long Beach. Koon Seng Road: visit by 4:30; coach groups thin after 5pm.

The batik workshop is three hours of wax in this neighbourhood if the tiles were the morning and the lagoon can wait. Goodman Arts Centre at Mountbatten is the old school of studios, a walk, open-studio weekends if the calendar is kind. Eurasian Heritage Gallery is the small room the Peranakan walk never sells. Choose one: East Coast cycling, a Katong breakfast or Goodman Arts Centre. Allow 90 minutes plus transfer.

Bedok 85 is the other east hawker if the lagoon is a different hour — residents, a tray, not a sea view. Bedok Interchange is the bus-interchange version. Neither is Old Airport Road. Palm Beach and Red House remain the other rooms at the seafood centre if Jumbo is a two-week wait.

NParks' own page puts East Coast Park at 180 hectares stretching over 13 kilometres, open 24 hours. Seventy-four barbecue pits along the beachfront, S$12 to S$20 a booking depending on the area — Areas C through G, book before you drag a bag of charcoal (nparks.gov.sg). Camping is Area D and Area G only, free permit, tents 5 metres apart, no open fires including camping stoves. Coastal PlayGrove in Area B: waterplay 8am to 8pm Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays except public holidays, and closed for maintenance this Friday 25 September 2026, the last of the September Fridays (nparks.gov.sg). Vertical Challenge 8am to 10pm the same days; slides 8am to 10pm daily, skip when wet. Sections of the nature playgarden stay fenced through 30 September. GoCycling Area C4: daily 8am to 10pm; adult single from S$10/hr (gocycling.sg). The footpath to C4 is widening through 21 November. The East Coast dog run at Area C1 is closed for upgrades from 21 September through 6 November 2026; the footpath to C1 through 31 October; Parkland Green lawn at C1 is returfing through 30 October; Toilet E1 stays shut through 31 October 2026. If you enter the water, cover up — NParks is still posting the southern-coast jellyfish advisory. The KPMG Wellness Garden in Area D5 is 24 hours.

Bedok Reservoir is the other east water, and it is not this sand. 41.7 hectares, 24 hours, a 4.3-kilometre gravel loop 200 metres from Bedok Reservoir MRT (DT30) — NParks, last updated 27 January 2026. Bedok (EW5) is the town centre, a different station. Forest Adventure is the treetop course over that quarry, last Grand 12pm on a Monday. PAssion Wave sit-on-tops are Wednesday to Sunday. The lagoon ride and Forest Adventure are separate mornings. The dedicated morning lives in Bedok Reservoir.

Jumbo is a nine-day booking, not a two-week one. Through Tuesday 29 September 2026 the East Coast flagship is running a farewell set for tables of four to ten, from S$258++, chilli crab and mantou, chilled lobster, crispy seafood tofu, and 50 percent of those set proceeds go to six charities (AsiaOne, 17 September 2026 / Jumbo Group). Last ordinary service is Wednesday 30 September; that night is a finale dinner for partners, not a walk-up. From 1 October verify the operator's current site. Riverside Point at 30 Merchant Road is daily 11:30am to 11pm, last order 10:15pm on jumboseafood.com.sg — that is the river, not the park. From 1 October, confirm the East Coast flagship before you go to 1206 East Coast Parkway. The lagoon food village still does stingray. The 6:30am cycle starts in the park.
