Katong & Joo Chiat Before the Coaches

This is the prettiest kilometre in Singapore, and it is wasted after 11am. Koon Seng Road is the photo. The rest of Joo Chiat Road is the reason to stay. There is no MRT that dumps you on the tiles — Marine Parade (TE26) is now the closest to East Coast Road; Eunos (EW7) or Paya Lebar (EW8/CC9) plus a short bus for Joo Chiat Road; Dakota (CC8) for Old Airport Road. Or a taxi. Or the cycle in from East Coast if you are already on a bike.

Koon Seng

Be on Koon Seng by 9:30. The five-foot ways are still in shade. The mosaic is for looking at, not for a photoshoot that blocks the resident trying to leave for work. Walk slowly. The Peranakan walk and laksa lab meets outside 112 Katong at 9:30 and will give you the clan stories, a kueh flight and a 40-year laksa recipe; it is the correct way to do this stretch if you like being told why a window is that colour.

Laksa

The laksa argument is local sport. 328 Katong Laksa is the famous bowl — coconut, cut noodles, spoon only, a queue that includes people who have flown for it. Marine Parade and the older Katong stalls have their own congregations. Pick a side, live with it, do not crowd-source it at the table. Kim Choo Kueh Chang at 111 East Coast Road is the other institution, and STB's visitor centre sits inside it, which is useful and slightly too on-the-nose. Chin Mee Chin is the kopitiam that still does kaya toast the old way if it is open the morning you land. Ang ku kueh, ondeh-ondeh, the pandan sponge that does not travel: buy a box, eat one on the kerb.

Old Airport Road

Old Airport Road Food Centre is technically Geylang and a 10-minute walk from the shophouses, and it is the best hawker centre in the country. Dong Ji at #01-138 for char kway teow (closed Thursday). Lao Fu Zi at #01-12 for the Bib Gourmand version (closed Wednesday and Saturday). Nam Sing Hokkien Mee. To-Ricos kway chap. The after-dark crawl is 7pm at Block 51 if you want a host; lunch before 11:30 if you want a seat.

East Coast

When the tiles start to cook, go to the water. East Coast Park is 12 kilometres of coast, BBQ pits and rental bikes. The lagoon food village is stingray, satay and coconut on the sand, no booking. Jumbo at East Coast Seafood Centre is the chilli crab people mean, and it cooks its last plate on 30 September 2026 — NParks is redeveloping the centre, 39 years, opened 1987 (Straits Times / CNA / Jumbo Group). The last plate is 30 September 2026. The other Jumbo rooms — Riverside Point, Dempsey, ION, Jewel, Riverwalk, Sentosa — are not this park. The open beach is for sitting and cycling; the lagoon is for swimming.

The Intan

The Intan is Alvin Yapp's private Peranakan house museum, kebayas and beads, small-group tours only, by appointment. It is the opposite of a blockbuster and the reason to stay east an extra two hours. Long Beach is Jumbo's rival — Long Beach uses black pepper; Jumbo uses chilli. Wild Wild Wet in Pasir Ris is the east-side waterpark if the lagoon is not wet enough; weekday tickets are cheaper. Forest Adventure is high ropes over Bedok Reservoir, closed shoes, morning booking.

Joo Chiat at night is a different street: grilled things, a bar in a shophouse, the coaches long gone. Katong Park is the lawn between the tiles and the water if you need grass. The Peranakan Museum itself is not here — it is at 39 Armenian Street in the Civic District, daily 10am to 7pm, Fridays until 9pm. Do the shophouses in the morning. Do the museum another day. They are not the same visit.

Geylang Serai Market is the other east, ten to fifteen minutes from Paya Lebar, not from Koon Seng: nasi padang, kuih, a Malay heartland wet market that the Peranakan walk never mentions. Dress modestly. It is not Old Airport Road and it is not 328. Do it as a separate morning, or as the evening after the tiles if you still have a stomach. Geylang night eating is the even-numbered lorongs after 9pm — frog, durian, zi char — and it is a different city from Koon Seng at 9:30am.

Walking times

Koon Seng Road to Old Airport Road is about ten minutes on foot. Dakota MRT (CC8) is the hawker door from town. Marine Parade (TE26) is the closest to East Coast Road, not the sand — the park is a short taxi, a bus along the East Coast Parkway spine, or the park connector if you already have a bike. The 6:30am cycle starts in the park. From the shophouses to the lagoon is a short taxi. Do not try to add Kampong Glam the same morning. The east is a day, not a stop.

328 Katong Laksa is 51 East Coast Road, spoon only, cut noodles, the bowl Gordon Ramsay ate, which is both a recommendation and a warning. Marine Parade (TE26) is the closest MRT; it is still a walk, not a dump onto the tiles. Kim Choo Kueh Chang at 111 East Coast Road still has the STB visitor centre inside it. Chin Mee Chin is the tiled kopitiam that reopened after a long pause — soft bun, butter, kaya. Do the kueh on the kerb. Do not eat laksa and then immediately get in a taxi to Jumbo. That is two coconut-and-chilli arguments before noon.

Late afternoon

Stay for late afternoon if you can. The shophouses at 4:30pm are a different colour and the coaches have left. You came for the tiles. You should leave with sand on your ankles and a kueh box leaking pandan onto your bag. That is a completed east.

Marine Parade Food Centre is the residents' lunch, no sea view, a short walk from East Coast Road if 328 has a queue that wraps the block. Haig Road is the other Katong-adjacent tray. Dunman sits between the tiles and the park. None of these is Old Airport Road. They are what you do when Block 51 is a different morning. Fort Tanjong Katong is the buried fort in Katong Park, a plaque more than a ruin, ten minutes if you like a footnote before the sand.

The Eurasian Heritage Gallery is the small, necessary room most Katong walks skip — the Eurasian Association, a community the coaches do not sell, about an hour, a few dollars, already in the east. The batik workshop is three hours of wax and dye in this neighbourhood, messy, slow, a piece you take home, the correct craft for these shophouses. Goodman Arts Centre at Mountbatten is the old school of studios, open-studio weekends if the calendar is kind, a walk not a ticket. The batik workshop, the Intan and 328 Katong Laksa are three separate mornings.

Sri Senpaga Vinayagar on Ceylon Road is the Ceylon Tamil temple this stretch actually owns — a working hall, shoes off, a different grammar from the tiles, ten minutes if you came for incense instead of laksa. It is not Sri Mariamman and it is not a Peranakan extra. Marine Parade (TE26) is still the closest MRT to East Coast Road, not to the sand. The park is a taxi, a bus, or the connector. There is still no station that dumps you on the lagoon. That is why the 6:30am cycle exists.

Roland Restaurant is the other chilli-crab room if Jumbo is a two-week wait — still East Coast, still a booking. The Peranakan cooking class is three hours of rempah in this neighbourhood, messy, the correct craft after the tiles. Bedok Town Park is 24 hours (NParks), the inland lawn if the lagoon is a different hour. The cooking class, the crab room and 328 Katong Laksa are three separate meals.

Bedok Reservoir is the other east water, and it is not this sand. 41.7 hectares, 24 hours, a 4.3-kilometre gravel loop 200 metres from Bedok Reservoir MRT (DT30) — not Marine Parade (TE26), not the lagoon. Forest Adventure is the treetop course over that quarry, last Grand 12pm on a Monday. Koon Seng Road and Forest Adventure are separate mornings. The dedicated quarry lives in Bedok Reservoir.

Jumbo is not a two-week wait. It is a nine-day one. Last service at 1206 East Coast Parkway is Wednesday 30 September 2026. Through Tuesday 29 September the house is running a farewell set for tables of four to ten, from S$258++, chilli crab and mantou, chilled lobster, crispy seafood tofu, the off-menu plates they pulled years ago, and 50 percent of those set proceeds go to six charities (AsiaOne, 17 September 2026 / Jumbo Group). The 30th is a finale dinner for partners, not a walk-up. After that date this pin is historical.
